Adding: 3 “I feel much better after getting a complete report.” Long before the Japanese struck, Mr. Willkie had indorsed the President’s foreign policy, reserving the right to criticize his methods. In his talk with White House reporters after the luncheon, he let no criticism creep into his remarks, but in one instance it might have been the candidate of 1940 speaking. He had expressed the conviction that the United States could “oute produce any country or combination of countries.”
Offered No Job
Then, with a twinkle in his eye, he repeated the most familiar phrase of his Presidential campaign: “Only the productive can be strong and only the strong can be free.” Mr. Willkie said he had been offered no post in the Government and someone asked him whether he would accept one “if the President calls.” “In times like these,” he replied gravely, “there is not any American who would not be willing to give everything he had in the service of his country.”
COUNGIL APPROVES SEMI-ANNUAL LOAN
City Council wound up its 1041 calendar year last night with a brief debate over the City's praetice of making semi-annual temporary loans. After the members approved loans totaling nearly $1,000,000, Councilman Harmon A. Campbell, Republican, protested against the practice. The loans were made to finance municipal operations pending tax collections, It has been a custom for years. Councilman Albert O. Deluse, Democrat, pointed out that a greatly increased tax rate would be necessary to enable the City to abandon temporary loans which cost the City about $5000 a year in interest payments. : “But I don't believe taxpayers’ organizations would let us do it,” he said. Resigning themselves to the status quo, the Councilmen adjourned for the year. The Council will reorganize at its next meeting Jan. 5.
