EXTEND PRICE CURB--HOOVER

Control of Production and Use of Commodities Suggested.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (U.'P). —Former President Herbert Hoover

urged today that price contro! leg-| islation be extended to include con-|

trol of the production and use of commodities, Appearing before the Banking Corfnittee, which is holding hearings on House-approved price control legislation, Mr. Hoover held that wage fixing was an impossibility, and said hé was opposed to the licensing provisions of

the bill, Control! of prices would be extremely difficult, he maintained, unless the commodities thus affected were themselves controlled. Of proposed licensing authority Mr. Hoover said that he had “great

fears as to what reaction it would!

have on the people.” “There would be a great deal of fear that an administrative official would have the right to end a man's livelihood overnight,” he said. “I dofi’t see how fixing wages ¢an | be done,” he added. He suggested that instead of putting all price controls in the hands of one man, the problem be turned

Urge Repair of Old Flashlights |<

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (U. P). —Civilian Supply Director Leon Henderson today urged home owners to “look around the attic” for old flashlights that may be ree paired “for a few cents.” He pointed out that if discarded ts are put to use, blacks outs need not be feared. It was estimated that 70 per cent of American families owned one or more flashlights and “millions” are apparently tucked away in attics or cellars. The demand for new flashlights, Mr. Henderson pointed out, ree sults in a drain on“ecritical ma-

next year, all funds, to pay the clerical help of House members. WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (U. P.). -Senator A. B. (Happy) Chandler, that fightin’, fuedin’ mountain boy from the Kentucky hills, marshalled his forces today to repay the House for the first snub that one congressional chamber has delivered another in 150 years. It was all over 1-45,000th of an appropriation bill, but the bill carried $10,000,000,000 and the 1-45,-000th of it was destined to pay the salary of one research assistant for each senator. The feudin’ started when the House voted down a $216,000 item in the bill to pay the salaries of the executive assistants. The Senate, faced with the necessity of passing the appropriation bill, which was to provide guns and munitions for America’s armed forces, swallowed its pride and reluctantly acquiesced. “It is insulting to me to have the House tell me I haven't sense enough to know how much help I need,” Senator Chandler said. Senator Bennett C. Clark, (D. Mo.) suggested that the Senate
