HITCH'S MOVEMENTS SKETCHED FOR JURY

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Dec. 12 (U. P) Defense counsel for Paul Hitch, called additional witnesses today in an effort to establish an alibi for the 39-year-old road worker, accused of the fatal shooting of Scott Gerald Carver Sept. 13. Nine witnesses for the defense testified briefly yesterday that each had seen Hitch the night of Carver's death. The testimony revealed that Hitch was noticed severu! times in the business district of Crawfordsville the night of the crime and that he was near a tavern at the time of the shooting.

WASHINGTON, Dee. 12-—If the

State Department suggestion had been followed, Congress would have acknowledged formally that Germany and Italy are working together on a plan for world conquest. But at the insistence of Senator Tom Connally (D, Tex.), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the declarations of war against the Axis powers contained ne such preambles as the Department suggested. Confusion over whether to ac-

cept the State Department version accounted for the interruption in Senate proceedings between the reading of the President's war message and the Senate's unanimous vote to declare war. During this interruption, Senator Connally conferred on the Senate floor with Rep. Sol Bloom (D. N. YO, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and House Majority Leader McCormack

He said it was true the Nazis have a plan of world conquest, and | that they have committed repeated acts of war against us. But we have known these things for

months, he said, without declaring war. Moreover, he wanted the full support of his committee on both resolutions of war. 80, he and the cornmittee deleted

this preamble, and substituted the

same language that preceded the declaration against Japan, which merely recited the fact that war had been declared against us. Reps. Bloom and McCormack, whe were prepared to accept the State Department preamble, heard that the Senaté was not, and hurried over to find out the facts. The Senate, without formality, suspended its business; Messrs. Connally and Bloom held their “joint session” in the center Senate aisle; the House

leaders were informed the Senate was not accepting the State De-

Va.) related how Mr. Roosevelt commented to Legislators at the signing ceremony that some members of the Connally committee had wanted to phrase the declarations

in a manner to spare the feelings of Axis civilians. “Hell, we not only want to hurt their feelings, we want to kill them!” Mr, Glass told the Presi-
