CHINESE SLASH HONGKONG JAPS

‘Now Is Ideal Moment to Win Battles,” Chiang Tells Troops.

HONG KONG, Dec. 12 (U. P).— Chinese troops, developing a powerful offensive, are striking at the flank and rear of Japanese forces attacking Hongkong and have caused a temporary weakening, at least, of the Japanese drive, it was | said officially today. The Chinese offensive, directed personally by Generalissimo Kai-Shek with the aid of British advisers, according to wireless and other reports from China, has assumed big proportions already. Not only are the Chinese attacking throughout Canton some 90 miles west of Hongkong, according to reports, but are moving asses of men toward the coast to tack the Japanese north of the colony. The Chungking radio asserted that the drive was aimed directly at aiding the Canadian and British forces defending Hongkong against overwhelmingly more numerous Japanese forces. Jap Losses Heavy The British radio, heard by the United Press in New York, said the Japanese already had lost an estimated 15000 men in Chinese attacks north and northwest of Canton and that additional Chinese units were on the way to the fornt. Chinese newspapers were reported to be urging the employment of Chinese troops at every point where they could aid the Allied cause, without regard to losses and suf- | |
