L.BY YOUNG GIANT,

James Patton, Re-elected, Rated a Comer by Farm Group.

By ROSCOE FLEMING Times Special Writer

DENVER, Dec. 11.—There's a new|

bass note in the voice of the American farmer; and it promises to get louder. It comes from James G. Patton,

8 smiling young giant who has just - been re-elected president of the |

Farmers’ Educational and Co-Oper-ative Union, by a convention which approved his expansionist plans and asked the membership to take the unprecedented step of extending his term to three years.

» On an ll-acre tract in Denver, the union plans a national home, starting with an office building, later including a complex of warehouses and possibly manufacturing plants, for the union’s co-operative business organizations throughout the region. One union affiliate, in Minpegota, is already the largest grainhandling business in the world, and union members co-operatively own about $100,000,000 worth of creameries and other distributors of farm products, agencies to buy farm supplies and consumers’ goods, and electric lines, irrigation ditches, ete. The union disavows Government price-fixing as a means of bringing about farm prosperity, after an earlier flirtation with it. Let the farmer use his own organized power, It says; let him both buy and sell co-operatively, and thus get as good a price as possible through his own efforts, on both his buying and selling. Mr. Patton thinks the AAA program is wrong both in philosophy and effect.

Opposes AAA Program

“There should be no restraint on the production of needed and useful farm products,” he says. “The AAA program, as at present administered, tends to encourage farm ‘operation’ of the corporate type, and on the other end .to increase farm tenancy. _ “The unit of administration should be the farm family and the family farm. "The program should be re-framed to that end. The basis of a happy and natural! rural iife is the farm family. Everything should be done to build it up, and I do not mean merely by the crop program. Country education is modeled too much on the city pattern.” 3 Mr. Patton has been serving as a Government adviser and observer of NYA and other youth movements. He thinks American youth is the same fighting, ambitious, determined group our youth has always been, with unimportant exceptions, and that our young people will be better than we.

Friend of First Lady

He and Mrs. Roosevelt are friends —he admires her greatly, partious larly for standing by the South movements when the heat was on. The Union is frankly devoted to the interests of the lower-income group of farmers; it is more radical than either the Grange or the Farm Bureau Federation. Mr. Patton thinks the Nonpartisan League did a fine pioneering in giving a voice to farm discon. tent, and his organization has the same fighting concept. It works with organized labor, especially the C. 1 O
