Manufacturers and middlemen are permitted to vary their prices some but not allowed to shift the bulk of the
squeeze to the retail merchant. Canada wen easy on farm prices. Livestock, milk, cream, dairy butter, cheese, honey and maple syrup prices were not frozen in cases where the farmers sell directly to processors, manufacturers or dealers. But since the retail prices are frozen, anything extra received by the farmers necessarily has to come from the middleman’s profits. Cotton, steel, rubber, cocoa, tea and coffee—all imports Canada can’t control in a price way—will be bought by the government and sold at a loss if need be to keep retail prices down. Publicity is to be used in helping enforce the new law. When retailers elaim the manufacturers are squeezing them, the case will be reviewed, If not settled satisfactorily and quickly, the case will be aired in the press. Violating the law means a $5000 fine.

BREAK IN SOYBEANS ; CUTS GRAIN PRICES:
CHICAGO, Dec. 6 (U. P).—
| Grain futures failed to attract any
sustained buying today after an early break in soybeans had car-
:|ried all futures fractionally lower.
Closing prices on the Board of Trade showed small losses for the day. Wheat fluctuated within a range of less than one cent to close & to 7% cent a bushel lower; corn finished off 3% to 3c; oats off 3% to 3c; rye off 1% to 5c, and soybeans off 23% to 3%ec. Favorable harvesting weather over the main soybean producing area inspired selling of bean futures that swept prices down more than 3 cents a bushel.
