ATOM-SMASHER USED ON CANCER
Treatment of Late Cases Described by Doctors As ‘Encouraging.’
{ By Science Service : SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 5. —Sixtygne of 129 patients who faced death from advanced cancer have been gaved and some of these perhaps cured by treatments with the great atom-smashing machine—results so encouraging that less adv anced dases will now be treated by Uni-
oy of California physicians, it as announced to the Radiological
Society of North America in con- |}
vention here. This announcement, made by Dr. John C. Larkin, research associate the radiation laboratory, and Dr. i 8. Stone, professor of roentgenoldgy in the University’s Medical School, has been awaited by physicians and patients everywhere since treatment of late cancer with the atom-smashing cyclotron was begun three years ago. A total of 153 patients have been treated during the three years. The 129 with which the report was concerned were treated with the 225ton cyclotron; the remaining 24 with the 85-ton cyclotron. Beams of neutrons—sub-atomiec rticles—are given off by the cyclotron during the atom-smashing process. These neutron béamg are shot into the cancerous tissue, producing a marked shrinking of the tumor. The patient feels no sensation, however. Drs. Larkin and Stone reperted that cancer of the skin with extension into the underlying bony structures, cancers of the mouth and throat and primary cancers of the prostate gland have shown the best response to treatment. They said results are “encouraging,” and enough is now known about eyclotron treatment to star$ using it on patients with less advanced cancer.

AUCTION LOOMS FOR: RESERVE BUILDING
WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (U. P).— The $3,500,000 marble building of the Federal Reserve Board—one of the capital’'s handsomest show places—goes on the auction block next month unless the tax dispute between the board's officials and the district of Columbia is settled. The board has a capital of $150,000,000 and a surplus of $150,000,000. The tax bill amounts to $269,245 and penalties will add $45,773. The issue: District commissioners claim the board is subject to taxation. The Reserve Board claims it is exempt. A tax bill has been sent to Board Chairman Marriner 8, Eccles and the property has been advertised for sale to the highest bidder on Jan. 6,
