And never was the town £0 overs run with 24-karat royalty, If a crown princess or king or ex-king or some notable peer is not just ar. riving or departing from Washing ton it is a dull day, indeed. World War No. 2 has isolated the German, Italian and, to a large measure, the Japanese diplomatic groups, of course. They are not being asked anywhere much and no hostess is likely to make mistakes by seating any of them next to the wrong person, But there are gradations of Ais! affiliations and the woman whe would seat 10, 14 or 30' persons at her table must know something of world and domestic polities lest even those diplomats and politicians who do move freely around the town become the centers of painful little incidents. Feeling is so high among Amerioan statesmen that hostesses must be sure that they do not mix the extremist isolationists with extrem. ist Interventionists at table lest there be bitter language between soup and nuts, Mrs. Roosevelt sald the White House had decided to eliminate state dinners, formal receptions, teas and parties because “conditions are so! serious and the President busy.”
Saves Money
The White House ban on formal entertainment will save money for the QCovernment, but, strangely enough, will mean added expense for the Roosevelts personally, The Government assumes the cost of formal and official entertainment, but the cost of unofficial affairs is borne hy the White House family. The line of demarcation between an official and unofficial affair is a difficult one to make. Custom has it, however, that if representatives of more than one political party are present, it is official; if only the ad-
