Shops at Manual Ease Stout Field Priority Problem

Here is how a man's school can help him long after he is graduated. John P. Parrish, architect in charge of improving Stout Field, the National Guard Airport, and Leigh

Hughes, electrical engineer on the project, were discussing their troublés recently. Mr. Parrish needed some iron rings, to be used in anchoring planes to the concrete runways, but even though’ the work was proceeding through the Adjutant General's office, the priorities problem had him stumped. Then both men remembered the fine metal working shops at Manual High School which they attended. They called E. H. Kemper MecComb, Manual’s principal, and told him their problem.

In a short while Mr. Parrish had 100 iron rings, complete with attached eye-bolts, built to minute specifications, and work at the airport proceeded. Eighteen students, working under N. H. Poole in the General Metal course, had made the rings and bolts from drawings supplied by Mr. Parrish, .working in addition to their regular classwork. » » ”
