takes considerable time with a list this long, and the preparation of . fruits and nuts is one that deserves
loving care. The ingredients: 4 cups flour 1 pound butter 12 eggs .1 teaspoon soda 2 pounds brown sugar 2 pounds seeded raisins 2 pounds seedless raisins 1 pound blanched almonds 1 pound currants . 1 pound mixed peel 1 pound candid cherries 1 pound candid pineapple 2 oranges 2 lemons 1 cup molasses 4 teaspons cinnamon 2 teaspoons nutmeg -1% teaspoons mace 4 teaspoons allspice
Cleaning and chopping the fruits and nuts is the first task. Seedless raisins and currants should be washed - and drained in a sieve or colander; sticky seeded raisins should be separated and springled
with flour so that they will separate
and be distributed evenly throughout the mixture. . If you buy almonds in shells remove these, then pour boiling water over the nuts and let stand for a few minutes to loosen the skins so that they slip off easily. . A chopping bowl] is almost a necessity for preparation of these and the peel but they can be handled on a board with a sharp paring knife. ‘The size of pieces you cut in any of these is optional. If you like big chunks of
‘nut or citron to bite into, make
them large. But if. you prefer a cake that is a smooth blend of all its ingredients, chop everything fine.

"Old Fashioned English Fruit Cake Is

THE OLD-FASHIONED IDEA of making Christmas gifts is enJoying a real revival this year and many a good cook is turning her kitchen into a workshop for this purpose. along by grandmother are guides for® holiday fruit cakes, traditional cookies and candies that fill the air with aromas of spicy-promises as they cook. mass. Mix thoroughly, then add the spices and stir well again. Thorough mixing and stirring is necessary throughout the procedure in order that each ingredient will be. well distributed in the batcake be even in texture, ‘ ’ _ Follow through on this when adding’ the fruit mixture to the batter. Add a little, then -stir a lot. Pans should be lined with several layers of paper cut to fit and protruding a little at the top. Grease thoroughly. Bake in medium oven (350 degrees F.) for at least three hours and be sure that cakes do not burn. Lower heat to 250 degrees after one and one-half hours. When cakes have baked for one hour place heavily greased paper over the tops. If you want to decorate, remove this paper when three hours are up and apply a design of candied fruits or nuts, as you like, and brush over all with honey. Bake another 20 minutes.
Curing Process
WHEN CAKES are cool start your curing process by sprinkling two tablespoons of sherry, rum or brandy over the top of each. ‘Leave in pans and wrap in several layers of waxed paper and store in a cool place, but not the refrigerator. Repeat the curing process once a week, using more or less liquor as needed. There's too much if the top of .the cake is losing its firmness. It should be only slightly sticky. For shipping any distance leave the cake in the pan and wrap in layers of fresh waxed paper before covering with holiday wrappings. Otherwise, cake may be removed from the pan and the greased paper peeled off, fresh waxed paper substituted and the Christmas wrappings applied to make it complete. * This recipe ‘can be used for a big cake, to be baked in an angel cake tin for four hours. Start at 350 degrees and lower heat to 250 degrees after two hours.

There were to be repeat performances at 12:30 and 2:30 p. m. today. THERE IS A SOFTER LINE in play clothes, from hair ribbon taffeta shorts and bra bathing suits with flounces and dressmaker details. Many swim suits are in jersey and pique and are really designed to wear right into the water. One of the prettiest of the play suits was a Brigance print in black Chantilly lace design scattered over a blue background, Guaranteed to “wow” Miami Beach was a “little girl” chambray beach dress in light blue with white braid accenting the cap shoulders and great pockets. Incidentally chambray dresses in shirtwaist styles with matching hats shown yesterday would make good buys for wear here next summer—cool looking, simply styled and tubbable. In dressier clothes, Ayres suggested a jacket dress in natural shade of crepe, topped by an angora jacket in a matching shade worn with cattail brown accessories and natural turban. Or—blossom pink crepe dress under a pink tweed topcoat with polished calf shoes and bag.
. EJ 2 ” A NOVEL NOTE this season in resort wear is the number of black costumes shown. Companion pieces in a homespun fabric included black slacks and jacket with blouse, skirt and shorts in a grey and red print pique. Just think of the combinations! Eye-catching was a defense dress designed by B. H. Wragge—sans hooks, eyes, snaps, zippers and other things that priorities are making scarce. The dress in macaw blue is made quite large (in girth) like the chemise so it slides over the head and then a huge sash spans the waist to gather in the fullness at the front.

Carpeting That Fits Room On Many Christmas Lists

The broadl. carpeting which comes in 5, 12 and 15 foot widths is made to measure to room sizes, and no longer need the rug look like an island-in a sea of varnished flooring. While the hankering of many goes to broadloom carpeting, there is still a plentiful supply of readymade rugs in 9x12 foot and eight foot three inch by ten foot six inch sizes. Soft pastel colors vie with rich, darker shades for public attention in the local stores.
Since floor coverings are a prin-|E

rugs, or the .two-tone broadloom carpeting. Broadloom carpeting, either plain or patterned, probably is the best selection for use with modern furniture. Plain is suggested in case there is a decided pattern in wallpaper or draperies, while a pattern may prove more desirable with plain walls, draperies and upholstery covers. Colors used in the rug or carpeting can pick up the colors used in other parts of the room. One essential factor to be remem-
bered is that the floor is the foundation for the room, and generally speaking should be the darkest por-
tion, unless a very modern scheme is worked out by a person with knowledge of decorative technique.
Fashion for Rooms
The girl away at college; the guest room furnisher; the girl living away from home in pursuit of a career; and every home making heart will be delighted to receive a matching set of bedspread and draperies.
