and wrinkled. This year they come in five sizes, and with a variety of layette combinations for use until such time as the young mother feels an urge to do some sewing. There is also a variation called Squeezee, each of whose legs when squeezed gives forth a different cry; this baby has still a third voice when tipped backward. #7 28 tJ AMONG GROWING-UP dolls are Little Lady dolls with smooth, softcomplexions, rolling eyes, up-to-the-minute pigtail hair-dos and, just to make everything really lifelike, separate fingers so that they can wear gloves. | There's also Jeannie Walker, a coy miss who walks simply by having her upper arm grasped and then being moved forward. She sits down, too, in a natural manner, And there's a charming boy who looks very much like younger brother, clad in pastel corduroy overalls with Basque shirt, and wearing a snappy skullcap. There have been dolls before dressed in replicas of their young owners’ wardrobes. Now they come holding miniatures of themselves. And pert misses they are, too. Especially Me and Mimi, surprised looking yarnhaired young ladies made of cloth. Not realistic, but with a definite appeal for the girl who likes the whimsical. The same idea of doll carrying her own doll is carried out by Chinese Ming Toy, Mary with her lamb, Goldilocks and one of those bears. 2 2 2

ALTHOUGH IT HAS not yet made dolls difficul$ to get, naturally the war is reflected in some of the new dolls. Of course the Army and the Navy come in for their share of attention. There is one representative of each complete with uniform. And with whistles in the legs that give out . , . —, V for Victory.

And there is a large-eyed Bond Baby doll who waves the Stars and Stripes and carries her own Defense Stamp album with a 25¢ stamp pasted in it. A young representative of the spirit of America comes attractively boxed with two changes of costume so that she can be dressed for Colonial or Civil War days, as well as the present day. This doll might well inspire her young owner to look up costumes of intervening periods and, if she is at all interested in sewing, to copy some of them so that the doll can depict history of what women

first homemakers off the Mayflower through the years. & » 8 IN CONNECTION WITH this, it is suitable to remind doll-givers of the fascination tkat dolls of dif-

ferent lands have for most girls. Many of them who start collecting: nationality dolls keep up their interest long past the day when dolls -are playthings. Lovely ones are to be had, with costumes authentic in every detail. Movie-star dolls are no longer so much in evidence. Shirley Temple has reached the sub-deb stage, and other juvenile actresses have grown up and married. The chief effect of the movies on dolls this year comes from the Walt Disney Studios in the form of animals for the youngest in the family—but with a definite appeal for the teener, too, who likes amusing stuffed animals for her room. With the release of Mr. Disney’s “Bambi” and “Dumbo” come longlegged fawns, and cuddly lambs; and there are dogs, and horses, and donkeys, and calves, A lot of thought has gone into making dolls individal, sturdy, and appealing. drawing equipment and hobby kits are of this type. Dramatic play encourages imaginative development and helps the child to adjust himself to grownup living. Imitations of adult housekeeping and business activities are popular in this phase of play development; little stoves, miniature train systems and cowboy costumes are typical examples. Social play educates children to get along with one another, Games in which several children take part are essential aids to social play because they teach the fundamentals of good sportsmanship as well as concentration and quick, accurate

Baby needs bright-colored, lightweight, washable toys of varied textures. They should be too big for him to swallow and free of sharp corners and rough edges. He will enjoy cuddling soft, stuffed animals and dolls. Balls and push-and-pull toys will encourage him to creep and learn

velop his sense of hearing. Blocks, beads to bite, picture books and sand toys are basic play favorites. Bath toys of rubber, celluloid or wood are popular. And parents need not be afraid of babies sucking colors off their playthings. American toy manufacturers have used vegetable coloring since 1914.

As the child becomes more adept he will build walls and houses and cities, each achievement stimulating him to further use of his imagination. Books are an important item sometimes not considered for babies. But as soon as the young heir is beginning to sit up and distinguish objects, untearable, washable picture books should be on the list of essential playthings. Even a baby of a year and a half can learn to co-ordinate his play experiences by recognizing the resemblances between his stuffed teddy bear and the picture of the bear in the book.

2 8 2 THE REVIVAL of the rag doll is scheduled for this season—but how

different! The 1941 streamlined version is soft and stuffed all-cloth, like her predecessor, and some are nearly the size of real but gone are the button eyes. These dolls have “real” faces. One manufacturer features stuffed dolls which carry miniatures of themselves, taking their-style cue from mother-and-daughter fashions in the adult world. Educators now agree that a little boy’s desire to play with dolls is expressive of a basic play need and not sissy in any way. Dolls and stuffed animals help boys of the toddler and nursery school age develop imaginations and use their hands, just as they help little
