November Was Poor Stocks

‘Month for

NOVEMBER WAS ONE[4

of the worst months the stock market has had this year. Prices on a general average|i dropped to the lowest since June last year. New. York Stock Exchange values alone were pared almost a billion

and a one-half dollars during|a

the month. Trading was more active than it

the chief source of news affecting the nation’s egonemy. A super-tax bill for 1942 was in the making. Defense strikes and a threatened one in the railway industry stirred antistrike proposals in Congress. Congressmen ‘apparently were reluctant to enact any drastic price control measures at the present time, particularly with respect to farm commodities and wages. Most financial quarters regarded the compromise bill which the House passed last week as “toothless and inefficient.” * 2 2

OPA will survey cheese, putter, milk and meat prices in Indiana, ‘Illinois, Towa, Wisconsin and Michigan to see if price ceilings should be fixed. . Copper scarcity makes it hard on plated flatware manufacturers. . . . Gasoline rationing in Shanghai has resulted in a “black bourse” where gasoline can be bought—at doubled prices. . . .
