For the season of Advent, which new Christian year.

Church of the Advent: “Advent tells us Christ is near; Christmas tells us Christ is here!” The CHURCH OF THE ADVENT,

Advent with special ritual and sermons, ’

Joy Underlies Sorrow

Purple, the color of penitence, is worn by Catholic priests during Ad, vent. at the expected coming of the Christ Child is evident in the services, spiritual preparation calls for sorrow for one’s sins. But midway Advent, lest sorrow completely overshadow the hidden joy, the priests don rose vestments and Gaudete Sunday is observed with the entire mass full of hope and praise. ‘Because of its name, the 22-year-old Church of the Advent, 33d and Meridian Sts., is of particular interest now. Since Advent ¢onnotes new life and fresh beginnings, the church, with its many interests for children and youth, lives up to the name. Its sub-title is “The Family Church.”

A thriving Sunday school, the largest in the Indianapolis Episcopal Diocese, is the very center of the church’s life, according to the Rev. George S. Southworth, rector. The school is not only attended by children of the membership, but by those whose parents are members of dowhtown Episcopal Churches, those of other denominations or no churches at all, he says. And so interested in children and youth is the rector that he serves as Sunday school superintendent.

15 Parish Organizations

In addition to the school, there are 15 active parish organizations, including six women’s circles, the woman's auxiliary and the St. Catherine’s, mothers’, altar and choir guilds. Among them also is a junior chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew for high ichool youth. These boys assist with the celebration of the Holy Communion, keep. church school records and carry the U. S. flag and the cross as they lead the choir in the Sunday processional.

There has been no scurrying, in the Advent Church, to bring Old Glory out of storage and dust her off to wave again, since the present emergency began. The Rev. Mr. Southworth has stressed patriotism all through the 14 years of his pastorate and has kept the flag unfurled in the proeessional and the sanctuary. Very small children in his Sunday school recite the pledge of allegiance to the United States and the .Christian Flags every Sunday.

‘Parish Booklet Released

The Men’s Club, another group of the church, is just about to launch an every-member financial canvass. . In preparation, a parish booklet, full of photographs and with hand-lettered descriptions of every area of the church’s work, was released this week.

The Lass Society of young girls is the rector’s “right hand.” It takes its name from the initials of the four words, “Lassies Assisting Sunday School.” There are choirs for children and adults and a Brownie group. The three Girl; Scout Troops will tell you that they have started branches in several North Side churches, while cabinets filled with loving cups, pennants and-other trophies bespeak the record of Boy Scout Troop 80, which also meets in the church. Since the church is only 22 years old, it is now accumulating its treasures. Among them are a pulpit, litany desk and a lectern, hand

varian and onetime Christus of the Oberammergau Passion Play; also new silver communion vessels, altar brasses and two bronze tablets.

Need for Faith Cited

Among the church “relatives” to whom members refer with natural pride are the Rt. Rev. Thomas Jenkins, bishop of Nevada, and the Rev. Constant Southworth of Utica, N.

tryman, and the Rev. Mr. South-

worth, Episcopal clergyman, is the{ .

son of the Advent pastor. Tomorrow when all of Christen-

year ‘and men of the Episcopal Church throughout the world are receiving a simultaneous communion, the Rev. Mr. Southworth will

The Rev. J. F. McCauley, who has been conducting an information service on social and religious events for the benefit of men in military service, is looking for a financial sponsor to continue the work. He was notified this week that the Council of Social Agencies could no longer aid his service as it was transferring its work for soldiers to the Service Men's Club.

~ Ex-Service Man

The Rev. Mr. McCauley delivers two bulletins per week to the post and the armory. One sent on Tuesday announces lectures, study classes, fish fries, pageants, bazars and other church events the men may attend for diversion or instruetion. Another on Thursday gives the hours and sermon subjects for the Sunday church worship. The idea for such an information service occurred minister while he was making a survey of

BOYS DIRECTING CHURCH TRAFFIC

Boys are directing the traffic near the Wallace Street Presbyterian Church on Sunday mornings as a service to the church and the city. But it seems that the mothers who cross the streets have not cooperated wholeheartedly with the traffic boys. One woman leading a child across, in the middle of the block, was reminded, by the boy that corners were for crossing. She continued on her way remarking “Today is Sunday.” The lad reported that seven women, all with small children, took the same risk in one morning. He says that very small children walking alone crossed at the corners. .
