HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 29 (U. P.).—
{When you see’ a meek little man
officiating as justice of the peace for some movie marriage, its an odds-on bet he is Chester Clute,
Mr. Clute, a prime example of type-casting, is about as busy in the marriage business as some real justices. He has performed at least 56 screen ceremonies. His latest is that of Dorothy Lamour and William Holden in “The Fleet's In.” This is one of his more memorable ceremonies, inasmuch as it takes place in a taxicab. The stars who have been married on the screen by Justice Clute include: Claudette Colbert, Madeleine Carroll, Miriam Hopkins, Loretta Young and Mary Martin. If there is supposed to be some comedy connected with the scene, the chances are even better that Mr. Clute will be chosen to perform the ceremony. “I have never been & real justice of the peace,” said Mr. Clute, “and as far as I know no one in my famBut somehow they’ve made me one in the movies, so here I am marrying people right and left, .and doing a mighty. professional job of: it, too.” Mr. Clute said he. has received letters from real justices compli-’ meénting him on his technique. SOMETIMES WE doubt what press agents for the stars say about their clients. For instance Hollywood is ready to swear tha’ Ann Sothern, before she was 10, had been run over twice by automobiles, three times by bicycles, and almost burned to death at least once. HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 29.—One day the studios just. what were the
‘|duties of an assistant director and|# {this cynical individual answered:
“Well, as far as I know, he just stands around and now and then yells ‘Quiet!’ ” This was obvious and confirmed our own suspicions. However, other information has turned up since to. indicate that in at least some
pay people good salaries for such
“|small chores, the assistant director
is a very busy person. 3 Serves as Buffer
Checking with William Tummel and William McGarry, assistant di-
{rectors for Ernst Lubitsch in the
filming of “To Be Or Not To Be,” we discovered that an assistant di-
- [rector sometimes must be a sort of ' | walking: and, talking encyclopedia,
trouble shooter, mind. reader, lawyer, union expert, casting genius, | diplomat. and buffer between the director and the front office. - In fact they listed so many responsibilities that some doubt arose as to whether there was anything
guy, to do. Before the picture started, Tummel and McGarry had to go through the script and break it down into individual scenes, preparing : a shooting schedule to make most efficient use 'of sets, actors and workmen. This schedule doesn’t necessarily follow the pattern of the finished picture, in fact rarely 8S.
Estimate Costs Then they had, to figure out how
-many extras would be needed for ‘|each scene, their types, and neces-
sary properties. They charted the the picture, giving a basis for estimating total production cost. When shooting started, they were responsible for seeing that the right actors were galled on the right days. If a certain one happened to be out all night before an assignment, it nevertheless was their duty to find him and get him on the job. They had to keep tab on all the union rules governing extras and technical men. If any unexpected bills for overtime come in, they land noisily in the assistant director’s lap. If Carole Lombard or Jack Benny, stars of the picture, forget what they're supposed. to wear in any scene, the assistant director is supposed. to know, quickly. If he has any breath left to yell “Quiet!” he’s lucky.
IN PRAISE OF WOMAN
Production of “The Great. Man’s Lady,” starring Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea, is the result of an idea of Producer-Director William Wellman’s that pioneer men had been too eulogized and pioneer women too much neglected in early Western pictures.

Learns That Greta Garbo Is

0 Times Special | HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 20.—An ule

rell, scouted around Beverly Hills’ recently and found just the spot for a studio. He moved in his equipment, put up a sign, and then
{a little nervously -sat down and
waited for his first patron. Pretty soon a limousine slid up to the curb, and into Hurrell’s flossy
‘establishment walked Greta Garbo!
There could be no mistake; it was Garbo all right. What luck, dithered Hurrell to himself. He stammered some sort of greet--ing. The actress didn’t reply. She just glanced at him in the same way that she then proceeded to look at everything und the place. Finally, without having said so much as “Hello,” “Goodby,” or “Go climb a tree,” she went back to her car and was drivén away. The photographer has just now solved the mystery. Miss Garbo was inspecting the premises because she’s his landlady.
