Answers to Questions on How to Care for Clothes on Limited Budget
CARING FOR CLOTHES on a limited budget is something of a
problem say readers who write for
they can retain that well-groomed look. Following are answers to
some of their questions:
Q—I have a new, white silk blouse that must now be laundered. Please tell me the best way to iron it.
A—Silk scorches easily and white silk becomes ‘yellow when pressed with a very hot iron. Use a warm iron, protecting the fabric .with cheesecloth and iron'on the wrong side. The fabric should be evenly . damp, but not wet. If too wet and _ ironed with a hot iron it may be ‘* stiff and papery, and, if half wet and half dry, it may be spoted. After washing, wring the water pretty thoroughly out of the fabric, then wrap -in & turkish, towel and - wait awhile before ironing. Do not hang it in the sun or in a veryj|. light place as this has a tendency to turn white silk yellow.
Q—In laundering a white silk blouse I scorched it slightly. Can the stain be removed?
A—Dampen a cloth with peroxide of hydrogen, lay it over the scorched spot, then put a dry cloth over the damp one and press with a warm iron. Do not allow’ the iron to touch the wet cloth.
Q—How can the soiled places on the neck and sleeys of dresses be cleansed without having the whole dress cleaned or laundered? A—Place the soiled places on an absorbent pad and brush well with a stiff brush to remove loose dust and dirt. Rub the spot lightly with carbon tetracloride, using a small portion as a time and dry after each application.
%
Q-—How may I remove carbon- : paper stains from clothing? A—Use soapy water (never clear water) on them: immediately. White cotton and linen may be boiled heavy suds. Unwashable: an . colored materials may be sponged with denatured alcohol. ..Place a

blotter beneath the stain, with the
rub lightly with a sponging cloth lightly moistened with the alcohol. The pad absorbs the stain and excess moisture.
Q—Is there a home method that I can use to raise the nap on my velvet dress? It has become quite crusined .in places. A—Fill the bath tub full of steaming water and hang the dress high
position that the steam will penetrate from the ‘wrong side of the velvet. If you wish to raise only the nap-on-the crushed places, turn an iron on its side, or on its back in a rack, and place a very damp cloth over it, Do not have the iron too
over the pressing cloth with the pile up. Keep the velvet always in motion. The steam passing through the velvet raises the pile.
Q—Is there a simple. way to block or shape a knitted sweater at home? A—Turn the garment inside out, wet it and slip it over a piece of cardboard cut according to the shape and size that you want the sweater. The forms for the body and sleeves should be separate. Lay the garment on towels on a flat surface until it is fairly dry, then cover it with a damp cloth and press until the pressing cloth is just about dry. Leave the garment on the flat surface until it is absolutely dry; then remove the cardboard forms.
Q—I have a woolen dress that is in good condition except that the back is somewhat shiny. Can the shine be removed? A—The nap can be somewhat restored by sponging with a warm vinegar or ammonia solution. Use one tablespoon of vihegar or ammonia to a quart of water. Brush with a stiff brush against the nap.

Washing Hint
When building quilted ‘mattress pads, it’s a good idea. to purchase them a little bigger than the bed size, since they may shrink when washed. They need no special washing method, but, because they are so thick, it’s probable they will take about ten to twelve hours to dry. Mattress pads and: covers should be washed at least once a month.
