Boilermakers Have Better Balance, He Declares, but The N od Is Only by a- Shade
; : : By RED ni Times Special
GRANGE Football Writer
The old Oaken Bucket is on tap at Bloomington. Mediocre seasons are forgotten in this great rivalry, but I like Pure
due over Indiana by a shade.
The ‘are a better balanced outfit.
Boilermakers, despite a poor season,
‘Sadly outclassed, Southern California doesn’t belong in the same league with Notre Dame’s Bertelli, Juzwik, Evans and Co. in South Bend.
Many major football teams, in‘cluding - Hoosierdom’s Big Three, bring their seasons to a close, Nov. 22, and it's a day of traditional ‘rivalries. . Intangibles play a large .p these long-standing affairs. point for them. Spirit usually hits a seasonal high. Coaches go/all-out. There is nothing to hold back. Underdogs often have their day. In the East
I look for Pennsylvania to win a very close ‘battle with Cornell’ on Franklin Field. The Quakers are better equipped in size and depth. Carl Snavely’s Ithacans are rolling. Harvard has ope into one of the nation’s finest teams and should smother toothless Yale. That Harvard line, led by. Endicott Peabody II, is a corker.
Whoa, Pittsburgh
Despite Pittsburgh’s comeback, I'm sticking to Penn State at Pitt Stadium. Navy is too strong and versatile for Princeton in Palmer Stadium. Columbia, back in its own league after a trouncing by. Michigan, is badly battered. I doubt that Lou Little can get the Lion in shape for Colgate. Army hasn't exactly a breather in West Virginia, but should -win Be Fordham, with a week’s layoff after the Pittsburgh debacle, should be on the bounce and too strong for Saint Mary's of California in New York. There’s little to choose between Holy Cross and Temple, but I'm - casting - a shaky vote- for Johnny Grigas and the- Crusaders.
The same goes for Auburn in its Philadelphia match. with Villanova. Trouble for Dartmouth
Frank Sinkwich and Georgia are too strong for Dartmouth at Athens. Duke is on the Rose ‘Bowl trail, and I don’t think North Carolina State can derail the Blue Devils at this point. Alabama, another " Bowl-bound squad, takes its last hurdle in Vanderbilt’s once beaten Commodores. I like the Crimson Tide, but it will be a real ball game. Once. beaten Mississippi, sparked by Junie Hovious and Merle Hapes, should take Arkansas in Memphis. Tennessee showed surprising strength in beating Boston College and is my choice over Kentucky. Georgia Tech should repel a Florida club lacking only in re-
serves. Takes Michigan
Ohio State is capable of being stubborn hut in Paul Brown's first appearance in Michigan Stadium, I like the pulverizing Wolverines and their world of talent. Wisconsin should score a few points feaing! Minnesota in Min-

neapolis but the Gophers’ injured regulars, Bruce Smith and Helge Pukema, are back in action. ‘The Badgers have an inadequate defense against the tremendous offensive strength of the Giants or North. Northwestern, which has outplayed almost every team and yet suffered three defeats, should take Illinois in tow, though Bob Zuppke’s forces performed surprisingly well against Ohio State. Nebraska, last. season a Rose Bowl entry, figures to suffer its sixth straight defeat against Iowa. Missouri has put the Big Six crown on the shelf and should celebrate against Kansas. Kansas State wins the nod over Iowa State. T. C. U. Over Rice
Texas Christian may well suffer a letdown after its victory over Texas, but is still my choice over Rice. I like Southern Methodist over Baylor. 3 Tom Stidham- sits his old Oklahoma backyards but’ I think the Sooners have bo much for his Marquette club. Washington, fed by its fine backs —Ernie Steele, Jack Stackpool and sophomore Bob Erickson—figures to edge Oregon in Seattle. Santa Clara should take U. c. L. A. in stride. But, in ‘many instances and at this stage of the campaign, your guess is as good as mine or that of any other so-called expert.

Are Fullbacks
CHICAGO, Nov. 19 (u. P).—Pro fullbacks are picking up more than that bare yard needed for a first touchdown. They're getting a lot extra, according to the latest National Football League statistics, Of the first 10 ground gainers in the league, seven are fullbacks and three of them head the list. Brooklyn's Pug Manders, the for-
t|mer Drake University star, holds
his lead for the seventh straight week with 397 yards, while Green Bay's Clarke Hinkle and Pittsburgh’s Dick Riffle, both veteran plungers, follow with 335 and 309 yards, respectively. ~Only other player to gain over 300 yards is Frank Filchock, Washington’s tailback, with 307. . The Isbell-Hutson combination of Green Bay, of course, dominates the league's aerial offensive. Cecil Isbell has 94 completions in 169 passing attempts, and at least one touchdown toss a game. - Don Hutson not only paces the field in number of passes caught, 42, but maintains a lead in the scoring
