Data on Local Conditions Sought; Rent Base Here Formulated.
Indianapolis’ housing problem, a §Y- Produit of the City’s intensive efense industry development, was being met on two fronts today. The Governor's Commission on Housing, appointed last month - to survey the local housing situation, has called a public hearing at the|

mittee, set up recently by Mayor Sullivan at the request of the Office of Price Administration, formulated a rent base above which rents. will
before the Committee at City Hall. _All Citizens to Be Heard
At the State House tonight the} Governor's Commission will hear all citizens who have infermation pertaining to housing conditions. The Commission has asked all
‘groups and individuals wishing to be|
Leard to submit names in advance
St. Meanwhile, the Commission {is conducting a survey of dwelling units in the City with the aid of the Post Office, the Indiana Bell Telephone. Co., the City and State Health Boards, the WPA Real Property Inventory, the Indianapolis Water. Co. and the Indianapolis Power & Light Co. Material submitted by these agencies will be tabulated by a research specialist of the Indianapolis Council of Social Agencies.
Rent, Reductions Obtained
The Fair Rent Committee set Jan. 1, 1941, as the fair rent base. Rents which have been raiséd since that date will be questioned, since rentals paid on that date have been assumed fair and equitable, according to the Committee. Dr. Frank S., C. Wicks, committee chairman, announced that the Committee already has disposed of several cases in which rent reductions were obtained. The Committee’s activities on behalf of tenants are being conducted on ga voluntary basis. A Federal law which would give the Committee power to enforce its rulings is now pending in Congress.
