. Unhesitatingly, and without ‘assistance, Hawkins walked to his ‘death in the electric chair shortly after midnight. He was pronounced . dead five minutes after leaving his .cell—~the first man to be executed in Indiana in more than two years. The youthful slayer, calm and thoughtful, spent his last hours in low conversation with the Rev. Gruenenberg, Catholic priest at the State Prison.
Resigned fo Fate
Hawkins apparently was resigned ‘fo his death following a second refusal by Governor Schricker to commute the penalty to life imprisonment on a personal plea from his father. Tuesday, Governor Schricker ' rejected a similar plea : by ‘the condemned man’s ‘attorneys. ‘For his last meal, thé Owensboro, Ky., youth ordered fried chicken, “mashed potatoes with giblet gravy, creamed peas, biscuits, butter, coffee and ice cream. Hawkins saw no visitors on his last day. His wife and parents had come to the prison Wedensday and returned to Kentucky immediately.

Hawkins, with James Hayden, 21, and Clementine Luttrell, 17, both of Kentucky, went to Jeffersonville and hired taxi-driver Edmund Davis to take them for a short ride. Just outside the city, the trio stopped the cab and robbed Davis. ’ When he protested, Hawkins struck and killed him, according to the trial testimony. Hawkins was convicted and senténced in the Floyd Circuit Court. Hayden was given life imprison-
