CLOTHES RATIONING

BRINGS CRIME WAVE

Copyright, 1941, by The Indianapolis Times Pand The Chicago Daily Nove, Ine. |

LONDON, Oct. 30~The rationing of clothing has brought a new small crime wave to London. Scotland Yard is busy looking for a gang operating in West End clubs and restaurants.

The latest outbreak of crime turns on the difficulty of buying clothes without coupons. A small gang, apparently familiar with the habits of London's well-to-do, have been picking up men’s overcoats in club corridors and in restaurants where there is no coatroom attendant. Owing to ‘bomb damages ‘many clubs have doubled up. Consequently, a doorman seeing a stranger enter may assu®e that he is a member of a visiting club. When the doorman’s back is turned the

stranger walks out with the over-

coat of at least one of the members. The result is that many cold clubmen are walking the streets of London trying to spot their former coats and - many detectives are watching the second-hand market. |
