Being Planned to Increase i Buying of Defense Bonds 4
© IT IS AN OPEN SECRET THAT DEFENSE BoNDs |i haven’t sold as well as Treasury officials hoped they would. ~ Perhaps the public was waiting for a big drive, with fanfare| a" and parades like the Liberty Loan drives of the World War, But Secretary Morgenthau insists over and over that
gr Am the Government won’t put on the pressure that way this Am Can
time, Instead, another method is being tested out.
New York State will be the prov~ ing ground for the idea. It is simply this. An extensive system of “con= . tact men” will be set, up. These men) ) + owill try to. work through employee groups and labor unions. They will ask ‘the workers to tell their employers they want to buy bonds. Companies will then deduct. any amount specified from the worker's wages and buy the bonds for gi him. The juss Roger Budrow isn’t particularly new—it is ‘being done by some firms here. But the point is that the new plan will be a thoroughly organized, extensive program to put on the big push. Up to the first of this month, one and one-half billion dollars worth of defense bonds had been sold but only about 570 million dollars worth was purchased ‘ by 'smaller-income
persons. : Ed » »
JOB-SEEKING Oakies are migrating to California again and in greater numbers than when John Steinbeck wrote about them in his “Grapes of Wrath.” Now, however, there .are no border blockades or controversies as there were in the dust bowl migration five years ago. More than 85,000 job-seekers have gone to ' Californa by automobile this year, 45 per cent of them from Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas. But whereas the Oakies were hunting farm jobs .five years ggo, they are after shipbuilding, aircraft and other defense jobs now. J ® 2 = ODDS AND ENDS: Harold L. Ickes reports 12 of the 40 U. 8. oll tankers Britain borrowed from U. 8. have been returned, three more will be this month, 256 next month. . . . Record-breaking October heat has resulted in a second crop of cotton (new bolls on old stalks), an unknown phenomenon heretofore, in [© West Tennessee, Eastern Arkansas and Southeastern Missouri. . . . If U. 8. enters the war, stock market men expect trade to boom again to million shares a day. .. . In addition to two Lawrenceburg, Ind. distilleries, another one, Brown-Forman of Louisville, will process Govern-ment-owned corn in 190 proof alcohol for Charlestown smokeless pow=der manufacture. Brown-Forman will supply 8000 gallons a day, will build new. stills cisung sm to $100,000.
