Need Only Steady Supplies For. Plane-Tank Teaming, General Declares.
8 T. LUCEY Times Special Writer
WASHINGTON, Oct. 28.—Given a steady flow of equipment, the Army “in a few months” will have a coordinated plane-tank attack force matching any in the world in everything, except actual battle experience, Lieut. Gen. Delos C. Emmons, chief of the Army air forces combat command, predicted today. Slowness in getting special radio}.
equipment nedessary for plane-tank communications has delayed somewhat development of an American

counterpart of the air-ground blitz team used with such telling effect by Hitler. But this bottleneck is gradually being broken, and the coming Carolina maneuvers, will see special emphasis on plane-tank operations. Development of the plane-tank team was discussed here last week . in a conference between Gen. Emmons and Maj. Gen. Jacob L. Devpo chief of the - “Army's armored orces.
Careful Planning Needed
Gen. Emmons said today that to get the point of view and to understand better the problems of the “other half” of the team, he will spend some time with Gen. Devers in the tank chief's command car while the maneuvers are in progress. It takes the most careful planning to get the type of air support given the German ground forces in the Low Countries, and Gen. Emmons is laying special stress on the importance of thorough reconnais-
sance. : Not only must planes and tanks be able to communicate between
ground and air, Gen. Emmons]
pointed out, but planes must be able to communicate with other planes and tanks with other tanks.. This demands most exacting training of radio operators, who at the same time must be prepared to cope with a barrage of false signals laid down by the enemy to disrupt his communications.
Winter No Handicap ‘Winter will not stop development
W of the plane-tank team, Gen. Em-
mons said, and after the maneuvers all the light bombardment ‘planes that can be spared will be turned over to the armored force for expansion of the air-ground units. The newly devised air .support command will be employed in the
Carolina maneuvers for the first,
time. This unit, organized solely to work with the ground army, consists of light bombardment and observation planes, tow-target units for anti-aircraft practice and airborne infantry transport units. The air support command has been brought to full development only since the Louisiana maneuvers last month, The Carolina maneuvers will see
employment of lafger forces of the|’ newer model pursuit planes, inciud-|
ing the Lockheed P-38, the Airacobra P-39, the Curtiss P-40E, the dive bombers and medium bombers.

Marshall Testimony Hints Strong Force Planned To Defend Isles.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 (U, P.).— The War Department has urgent orders today to build up Philippine defenses. : ‘Evidence of the urgency of the situation was the disclosure by Gen. George: C. Marshall, Army Chief of Staff, that the armed forces in the Philippines are getting first call on new weapons—guns: and motorized and mechanized equipment. Gen. Marshall told a House Ap-

the present time, the Philippine garrison stands No. 1 on priorities.” Other indications of a speed-up in defense preparations in the islands include: 1. .Assignment of Maj. Gen. Lewis H. Brereton to command the air forces under Lieut. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, commander of the U. 8. Army forces of the Far East. 2. Disclosure by military quarters here that units of the Philippine Commonwealth Army are being called up for actve duty more rapidly.
V. F. W. CHIEF ASKS UNITY NEW YORK, Oct. 28 (U. P.)~— The United States already is under attack by Hitler, but “if we are united we cannot be beaten,” Max Singer, of Boston, commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, said today.

Must Find Job To Get Children
CHICAGO, Oct. 28 (U. P.).— A. repentant mother who abandoned her four small children because they were sick and Hungry searched for a job today so she could reclaim them. The children of Rose Palmer, 29, deserted wife of a taxi-driver, were. found last week in a ‘bleak flat ‘from which the family was about to be evicted. , Palmer had left a note identifying the children and saying that “some day I will come back and. get them.” When she contacted the Juvenile Court, she reported she had hunted unsuccessfully for a job and wanted the children. But Judge Frank Bicek said the court's first obligation was to the . yotingsters. “I know the anguish in _her “heart,” he said. “My job is to prevent, ‘the terrible mistake hap-
