Defense Shortages Have Caused at Least 3000 to Lose Jobs. in Indiana Thus Far By ROGER BUDROW.

AT LEAST 3000 WORKERS HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS in Indiand industries so far because of the defense program. But as far as can be learned, no Indiana concern has been forced out of business completely yet ‘because of

defense shortages.

The 3000 figure is probably conservative. The Indiana Employment Security Division asked 28 concerns, known to be hard-hit by defense material shortages, and they

alone said they had let 24388

But it is entirely possible that some very small firms in this State “have been forced out of business and the word hasn't .got around. However, neither the Employment Security Division nor the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce nor the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce knows of any instances. There are a number, however, that either must have some defense work . very soon or materials to make their regular products—or they are going to have to close up. An Indianapolis shoehorn manufacturer is keeping two men on the payroll to whitewash the plant and do odd jobs—hoping the log am will break. He hasn’t stamped out a shoehorn in two months—no steel. He has chased all over the Midwest hunting defense orders, without success. He is still hoping but he can’t meet payrolls forever with just hope. There is some encouragement in the appointment of Floyd Odlum, the spectacular Wall Street organizer, as head of the OPM Contract Distribution Service. He has appointed Frank Hoke as head of the Indianapolis office which is Just getting under way. If some of the small mantufacturers can’t get any orders through this new office, then, they believe, it means the end for them. But they are still hanging on for a "while, still hoping. # 8 8 INDIANA'S FARMERS may not realize it but they grew munitions this summer. Great quantities of alcohol are needed to make smokeless powder at Charlestown. Production of this alcohol hasn’t kept pace with the growth of the string of Government powder plants. So the Government asked the big whiskey distilleries to make alcohol for powder manufacture. Schenley’s big Lawrenceburg, Ind., distillery will convert 65,000 bushels of corn a month inte

grain alcohol, starting about Nov.

Roger Budrow

1. It will make 850,000 gallons of |

alcohol for the Charlestown plant by Jan. 31, 1942. Seagram’s distillery at Lawrenceburg will mash between 10,000 and 20,000 bushels of grain a week for the Charlestown plant.

BRITISH ASSETS in this country have shrunk from $4,483,000,000 at the beginning of the war to $1,527,000,000 on Sept. 1, according to the Treasury Department.

IF JAPAN should move south, cutting off U. S. sources for tin, rubber, burlap and pepper, there are these consolations: U. S. has a year’s supply of tin now, can still get some from Bolivia. We have here and on the way 613,000 tone of rubber, enough for more than a year at the present curtailed consumption rate 50,000 tons a month. There is a 3-month supply of burlap here and on the way. U. 8, has enough pepper for two years.

ODDS AND ENDS—Paint takers who thought new U. S.- wl ge tariff-cutting agreement ou d give them a break on linseed oil got a rebuff when erie” Tie ducers raised prices 5 cents a bushel right after tariff slash was made. . . . Italy is getting oil from grapeseeds as substitute for olive and linseed oils. . .., China is experimenting with growing flue-cured tobacco. . . . Old rags (needed to make asphalt roofing, linoleum, certain paper) have gone up $15 a ton|? since July 1 and Office of Price Administration is threatening action if dealers don’t stop it. . , , Bureau of Agricultural RP omomics predicts wholesale commodity pres will rise 10 per cent next year, tha farm income will. boom two billion dollars more. . . . du Pont’s new|9 nylon plant in Martinsville, Va., will 5 start producing on a small scale Nov. 1, eventually will double pal production of the synthetic fiber.

STOCKS SETTLE |: BACK IN A RUT

Many Traders Absent for Week-End and War Cuts Volume.

NEW YORK, ‘Oct. 25 (U. P.)— Stocks settled back to a dull turnover today with prices moving irregularly in a narrow range. Enough leading issues showed losses to bring the averages down a trifle, although there was no particular pressure. Many traders were absent for the week-end, which partly accounted for inactivity. Another restrictive force was uncertainty of events abroad. Steel shares were dull and lower and coppers gave up small fractions. Motors were narrowly mixed with a. fair amount of business in General Motors. Oils . encountered profit-taking after their recent bulge. Rails balanced off small gains and losses. Mercantiles and chemicals were steady to firm, while utilities eased. Johns-Manville lost 2 points in the building division.
