twin: which will join it sometime in 1843 cost the company $5,000,000, including boilers and new buildings. The story of “No. 3” starts about three years ago—before national defense ever became a newspaper| headline. Long-range estimates then indicated that: Indianapolis might need more power this year. The decision to order some generating equipment was a big one because, if the forecast were wrong, the new motor would be a $2,000,000 white elephant. How correct the decision was everyone now knows. Allison, Naval Ordnance and Bridgeport Brass— all big power users—are joining the other factories already here, and all using much more power than formerly. General Electric built “No. 3” at Schenectady, N. Y. It took more than a yea: to build. Then they tested it there, tore it down and
Slshipped it to Indianapolis in 20
freight cars. Most of the motor (95 per cent) is iron and steel mined and manufactured in this country. But there is also silk, wool oil, antimony and tungsten from China, rubber from Ceylon, asbestos from -Quebec, tin from the East Indies, shellac from India, nickel from Canada. The turbo-generator is as big as

which turns the generator creating the electricity. This motor uses a 600 miles-per-hour tornado of steam which strikes nearly’ 5000 “buckets” or blades attached to the : massive rotor (just like. a windmill). The tip of the largest bucket travels at 800 miles an hour—faster than sound. The motor now uses stearh at 400 pounds ‘pressure: and 700 ‘degrees temperature (Fahrenheit) from the present plant boilers that service the other two generators. Buf it will use 850-pound steam at 900 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature of iron when it glows dull red, from the new boiler which is being installed. This steam, incidentally, enters the turbine at 900-degrees temperature, leaves just 1-30th of a second later at. a temperature of only 92 degrees, is condensed and returned to: the boilers to be used over again. The new turbo-generator is cooled with hydrogen which circulates

PARITY BOOST AIDS PRICES FOR GRAINS
CHICAGO, Oct. 23 (U. P).— Wheat futures turned strong in the closing hour of the session on the Chicago Board of Trade today after backing and filling within a moderate price range a good deal of the session. The late rally carried prices up more than 2 cents a bushel and
‘was due to repdrts that the House
committee voted for legislation boosting parity payments on wheat
