Goldwyn Learns 33 Percent
Seek Film Career.
HOLLYWOOD, Oct 23 (U. P.).— When Samuel Goldwyn started making a moving picture about burlesque he discovered that neither he nor anyone in the organization knew much about the subject. ! Barbara Stanwyck was cast as a pi Stenger and she had to be educatex , 80 among their preparations for the film, “Ball of Fire,” the Goldwyn people sent out some questionnaires. Results were usually useful, always interesting. One of the questions concerned ambitions. Eight per cent of the girls admitted they had no ambition. Thirty-three per cent hope for motion picture contracts, 21 per cent are .content to be in a Broadway show or a night club, and the rest want husbands.

SURPRISING NO ONE, “SERGEANT YORK” is staying for another week at the Circle. This faithfully told story of thelfirst World
War's great hero has been box office bonanza the country over, Indian-
apolis- being no exception.
“A Yank in the R..A. F.” is staying on for another week, tod, at the Lyric (its third jn Indianapolis) and so tomorrow will bring us
but two new downtown movies.
Both the new ones are comedies. Bob Hope, who probably has given this country as many laughs in the past year as any other comedian, is coming to the Indiana in “Nothing But the Truth.” A—————
It’s like this: Using $10,000 which = Paulette Goddard had raised for charity, Bob bets that he can tell: nothing but the truth for 24 hours. This means, of course, that he must be very frank. In fact; he’s downright insulting, for he can’t compliment any person unless he really feels a compliment. You might be interested to know, too, that this is the ninth picture in which poor Bob loses his pants. In “The Big Broadcast of 1938,” he lost ’em in a college hazing. In “Give Me a Sailor” he got his white ducks mud splattered and while Martha Raye was cleaning them, in walk Betty Grable.
Opening Tomorrow—
INDIANA—“Nothing But the Truth,” with Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard, and “Buy Me That Town,” with Lloyd Nolan, Constance Moore and Albert Dekker, LOEW'S — “Our Wife,” with Melvyn Douglas, Ruth Hussey, Ellen Drew, Charles Coburn and John ‘Hubbard, and “Ladies in Retirement,” with Ida Lupino and Louis Hayward and Evelyn Keyes.
' Held Over
CIRCLE — “Sergeant York,” with Gary Cooper, Joan Leslie and Walter Brennan, A single feature. LYRIC—“A Yank in the R. A. F.,” with Tyrone Power and Betty "Grable, and “Charlie Chan in Rio,” with Sidney Toler, Mary Beth Hughes and Cobina Wright Jr.
The record continues in the same vein. In “Road to Singaport” he traded his pants for a sarong. In “Nothing But the Truth,” Bob is disrobed to prevent his escaping from shipboard. Perhaps you've guessed by now that some very unusual shenanigans are committed. ® # #
Two for One
“OUR WIFE,” opening tomorrow at Loew’s, presents the notunusual situation of a man being pursued by two women, one of whom is married to him. Melvyn Douglas is the chased one, Ellen Drew is his wife and Ruth Hussey runs third. A musician whom the fates have treated roughly, Douglas is trying to drink off the disillusionment of his wife's abandoning him. In the process he meets Miss Hussey. She revives him to a point where he composes a great concerto for trumpet and then his wife decides she wants him back. They fight it out on those grounds. ; For the next three weeks Loew’s will present what it terms “equal billings,” in ' other words, two pictures, either of which could as the No. 1 feature. The second feature tomorrow is “Ladies in Retirement,” taken from the successful stage play by Reginald Denham and. Edward Percy. Starred in the story of a group of musty ladies in a foggy old house in the English marshe lands are Ida Lupino, Louis Hayward, Evelyn Keyes and Elsa Lanchester. If for nothing else (we haven't seen it), the picture is at least noteworthy for its cast.
