Bill Shirley, who hails from Indianapolis, sings in “Doctors Don’t Tell,” a first-run picture opening tomorrow at the Emerson theater,
of Robert Louis Stevenson’s ghoulish classic. An unfortunate por‘trayal for Spencer Tracy, the new version does have a point or two in its favor, For instance, there's Ingrid Bergman as the luckless barmaid pursued and tortured by an evil she cannot understand. She proves that a fine talent
"can lift itself above an impossible
role. There, too, is some splendid camera work especially one superbly photographed chase of the maddened Hyde running amok through fog-bound London streets. Also the film has an extraordinarily polished production. The St. Clair shows it tomorrow through Sunday, the Uptown Sunday through Wednesday, : " t J ®
“Manpower” is another picture based on the triangle formula but one full of action and the potent triple starring combination of Edward G. Robinson, Mdariehe o story concerns the maintenance crews of high tension lines whose fighting and: love making is as full of voltage as the wires upon
_which they work.
Here's its schedule: Tomorrow through Sunday at the Irving, Rivoli and Strand; tomorrow through next Wednesday, Granada and Zaring; Sunday and Monday at the Daisy; Sunday through Tuesday at the Belmont; Sunday through Wednesday at the Vogue.

got their idea from Ruth McKenney’s stories in the New Yorker magazine. The play was directed by George S. Kaufman. The cast is the same which opened in Chicago on Feb. 17 and played until late: last summer. Marcy Wescott, whom New York has use”
the title role and Effie Afton, the part of her sister, Ruth. Miss Afton was last seen prominently in “The Women.” . Taking the heavy comedy assignment is Philip Loeb, who will be seen as frustrated artist and landlord who rents the two sisters a semi-basement apartment in Greenwich Village. After leading his own band for the past four years, Larry Sothern (all-American footballer not so long ago) is mak-
Brenda Marshall is the star of “Highway Wesi” a first-run picture opening tomorrow at the Granada.
FIGHTING LITTLES DIRECTOR CHOSEN|____
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 22—Shop talk—Richard Wallace will direct the studio’s “The Fighting Littles,” Booth Tarkington’s new novel. . . . Universal has signed Claude Rains
son, who played the strong-nerved masculine wanderer, George, in “Of Mice and Men” three seasons ago.
Ed Wynn in “Boys and Girls Together” brings his first Indianapolis engagement in 15 years to a close today with both matinee and night performances.
Pe Featured in - the show, besides Wynn, Marjorie Gainsworth, the D’Ivons and Dave Apollon, are several brother-and-sister acts, one of which is billed as Lucienne and Ashour, adagio dancers. Only in this one the girl turns the tables and bats the man around. Members of the famous Loyal family, Lucienne and Ashour dropped = their family name to avoid confusion with the innumerable Loyals who may be found on horseback wherever circuses are playing. Their great-grandmother was riding master for Napoleon III. Both left horseback for the variety halls at the age of 6.
The Civic Theater apparently takes its work seriously. The cast which will present “Burlesque” for the last time tonight went down to ‘the Fox the other day to see how burlesque is really done. All in the line of duty, etc. For about half the cast, burlesque was a new experience.
