TOD SAID HE couldn't stay and I hoped he was on his way down the road toward the Moryis house. Denny was too engrossed with his own thoughts about the next day’s story to look at the moon, so I prepared to sit down and read the papers I had neglected. Then, in the distance, I heard Finn McCool’s grumble and Maudie’s sharp answer. The tone in her voice bothered me. It didn’t sound quite natural. She came from the path to the dock so I supposed she had been

ably, I thought. She wouldn't learn to take it easily at first, “Did you row around the whole lake?” I asked. But she wasn't smiling as she opened the door on the screened porch, pushed McCool in ahead. There were red splotches on her cheeks and her breath was coming in short gasps. “Youll never learn. You've done it this time for sure. And you're probably still wearing that darn new corset,” I said, .really frightened. Denny was beside ‘me trying to drive the grim frozen look from her face with some witticism. “You've as good as lost your bet, Machusla,” he said, putting an arm around her shoulder, “but don’t worry, I'll still dine and wine you.” : She pulled away, heading for her pet rocker and sat down with a little moan. “Bet— You feel, you've lost.” We stared at her and then I felt a little sick. She was terrified. I could see it in her tightly gripped hands and in the shivers that went over her well-padded frame. ; “She’s dead. I was with her when h she went. II don’t think she suffered long. It must have happened just before I came along—and I don’t think she felt any pain.” . Denny clicked quicker than I did. He brought her a drink while I was still rubbing her hands and trying
