It was the last of the Carnegie Tech-Notre Dame series and the Tarters - decided to be stubborn. Time and again they made amazing goal stands. Well balanced, two great ends, a fine tackle in Daniell and splendid backs in Fisher and Graf. But there is a story we want to tell about that game. A Great Play ‘Tommy Melton, Purdue guard and co-captain, went into the game with an injury and they carried him off the field in the final quarter. But before that they dug him out of the bottom of every play. He jarred the ancestors of the Buckeye backs. And he made one of the finest blocks we have ever seen. ‘Fisher had punted to Smock on the Purdue 20-yard line. Smock started ‘up the field only to find Ohio’s two ends and a er lineman in a semi-circle ore him. He was trapped. * Then out of nowhere came Tommy Melton. His feet ended up in one man’s knees. His stomach in the second man’s hips. His head and shoulders in the third man’s stomach. Four men went down to earth. Three from Ohio and Tommy Melton. Smock danced up the field for 30 yards!

In that short sentence lies one and it's a honey.

of the football stories of the year

The way the details were worked out would shame a movie melo-

drama.

The time was Sunday afternoon. The setting was perfect—

Yankee Stadium, home of champions. The weather was ideal—bright

and sunny. The. crowd was there —25,385 paid with Mayor F. H. LaGuardia ready to throw out the first ball. And the cast was super-colos-sal—with ‘Jarrin’ John” Kimbrough and “Terrific Tom” Harmon, most famous of 1940s gridiron All-Americas. Everything dovetailed delightfully and a new page in football history appeared ready to be written. At the last moment somebody must have switched scripts because what started: out to be the most sensational display of pigskin prowess since the days of Red Grange became one of the most fantastic flops jin gridiron history. Harmon's playing time was 27 minutes and 39 seconds. He handled the ball 18 times. In 12 rushes he gained 33 yards for an average of 21% a try. He passed six times. Four passes were incomplete and the other two were intercepted. His net cost was $49 per stride. Kimbrough’s mileage was priced even higher. He played 33 minutes and handled the leather 13 times. He gained 25 yards for a 2-7/9 average and threw four passes. One was completed for 12 yards, two were incomplete and the other intercepted. His 25 yards cost $60 each. Kimbrough currently is supposed to be quite some shucks as a hardridin’ hard-shootin’ cowboy in a western movie and Harmon's task as a broadcaster is so far supplying him with meat and potatoes in satisfying quantities. Both were diplomatic in post-game statements. Harmon: “Pro football is every bit as tough: as college football.” Kimbrough: “It suah was a pleasuah to play with Mistuh Harmon.” Average Fan: Censored. P. S.—~Oh yes, Harmon ‘scored the American's only touchdown.

Fireman Triumph

In 1-0 Series

Times Special MUNCIE, Ind., Oct. 20.—~The Indianapolis Firemen were champions of the Indiana - Ohio Baseball League today but it took them a full full flag series to do it. The Firemen won the final game yesterday, 2 to 0, giving them three victories to the Cits’ two. Behind the six-hit hurling of Lefty John Twiggs the Indianapolis

hits in the seventh and two more in the eighth gave the winners their runs. Bill Wyss of the champions drove in both tallies and slapped out three hits. .

CHICAGO, Oct. 20 (U. P.).—~The office of baseball commissioner Kenesaw M. Landis today announced the official figures on the players’ share of the 1941 World Series take—$199,157.51 to the winning Yankees and $132,771.68 to the losing Dodgers.
