Mr. Hoover is one who constantly drives for a fast pace and after the lame and dragging first act, he had his charges going at a good rate of speed. So much so, in fact, that some lines were said without much

‘ meaning. Last night, however, was : night, In adress O0 & Gnemendous Wad of Chewing

really hardly more "than rehearsgl and one can ihe that such matters will work themselves as the run goes on. (The play will be presented nightly until Oct. 22.) “Burlesque” really is the story of Bonny and. how she manages tc pusih her unambitious, unfaith husband, Skid, onto ‘Broadway, bu meantime losing him to the cunning Sylvia Marco. There are some heart | throbs stuck around here and ther in the plot, but as seen last. night they are none too convincing. Ray Robinson as Skid does an energetic job and there are a couple of times when he turned some fine pieces of acting. His neurotic out burst against his wife and her “new man” in the second act had his audience correctly tense. .

Background of Burlesque

And when‘ he returns to the show (in Act IID: from a long and wear-

finds his ‘wife again, he ‘is excellent. This show is laid against a background of burlesque. Speaking as a person who spent his more formative years in pool rooms and fall-ing-down burlesque = ‘houses; it seemed. to this reviewer: that the background was rather’ authéntic. Dorofhy ‘Robinson, as’ Mazie, a “featured performer,” gets “off “her business: in - the approved Mae Westian manner. :

she sings a couple of - songs ‘that are sure things for comedy. The top comedy honors, go to William "Cook, who as Bozo, a: burlesque clown, doés a strip-tease act that drew the lustiest guffaws of

the evening.
