year from now.to get his 1943 license plate, ‘he'll probably get only one plate—that for the back of his car. . The plate probably will be blank and white and of such.a construction that if can be used for several years. There is nothing definite about this yet, but such a plan has been suggested ky OPM officials. And Indiana has yet to disregard a suggestion made “in the interests o national defense” by Washington. Foo, the OPM holds the whiphand on such matters through its ‘control of steel priorities,
Governor Considers It
Lawrence Reeves, state purchasing agent, received complete details of the OPM’s plan to cut down on the use of steel in license plates
by issuing only one- plate per car and making that plate good for several years’ use at a meeting in Washington last week. Mr: Reeves passed the OPM proposal on to Governor Schricker, and the Governor today said that he was “mulling it over in his mind.” . No changes are to be made in the 1942 plates because the. manufacture of most of them are complete. Indiana’s plates next year will be gold and blue in honor of Notre Dame’s 100th anniversary, The OPM’s proposal for the '43 plates is that they be made of not heavier than 22 gauge steel and not lighter than 24 gauge and that a durable enamel be used so that the plates can be used for several yéars, Size May Be Cut
The “1943” is to be placed on a piece of ‘steel about two inches square which ‘can be removed from the tag at the end of the year so that a “1944” can be ‘inserted. It also hag been sugkested that no state slogans be used on the plates and that the size be cut down as much as possible, Mr. Reeves said that the OPM Was suggesting the use black
‘| and white paint. because other pig-
ments, espécinlly yellow, are needed in defense work. The purchasing agent estimated that if the permanent plates were put into effect, Indiana would use only 70 tons of steel a year for the “date inserts.” Approximately 700 tons of steel are now used’in the state annually for making license plates. iL Police officials are expected to “squawk” about only one plate bein on a car, but theyll
ing place prosedly us “have to put up with
for the duration,” Mr. Reeves said.

JAPAN OFFERS NEW | ‘TRADE PROPOSALS
WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 (U. P.).— The Japanese Government is ate tempting to save the “peace” talks with the United States from failure with new proposals for restoration of trade between the two countries. This was revealed in the midst of dispatches from Japan most unfavorable to bettering U. S.-Japa-nese relations—a charge by a Japanese Government spokesman that the United States has committed “an unfriendly act toward Japan” by participating 'in Far East conferences with (Great Britain. Despite that and continuation by the Japanese press of its antiAmerican campaign, it was assumed here that representatives of the Government of Premier Prince Konoye still were making every effort to bring U. S.Japanese negotiations to a more favorable phase. The proposals for resumption of trade are being studied by American officials.
