2.8.8 . By BOB LEACH United Press Staff Correspondent LOS ANGELES, Oct. 9—The Pacific Coast Conference race is a: scramble this year—but not for first place. Clark Shaughnessy’s Stanford Indians appear at least as strong as they were last season after impressive wins over Oregon and U.C.L. A. ° The big questions at the beginning of the season were Southern California and Washington. Hotn nave answeied in the flat negative. Rated stronger than in 1040 when they ran 68 |second, the Washington Huskies a8 dropped their first two games. Southern California barely won its x pd opening game from Washington “13 |State and last Saturday’s massacre by Ohio State apparently doomed 7 |the Trojans to their worst season in a decade. Trojans Underdogs This week’s top contest on the far A-1 slopes: pits ‘Stanford against an Oregon State eleven that came back |strong to defeat Washington ‘last 60 |week after dropping its opener to c 23 | Troy. Stanford, with Frankie Albert and the kinetic Kmetovic driving the Model T in excess ‘of all the speed laws, is figured to win but the Beavers’ conquest of Washington was no fluke and they may 2 O Eps. .F-24 | be loaded for the Indians. orthern E-41 | “southern California, riddled with 22 | injuries and the even more excruciating mental hurts of that 33-to-0 lacing by Ohio, finds itself underdog against Oregon for their battle in Memorial Coliseum here. Oregon gave Stanford ga stiff argument before going down, 19 to 5, in the season’s opener but then had an easy time with Francis Schmidt's Idaho last week, winning 21 to 7. U.C L A, blown down by the Stanford storm, 33 to 0, last week. moves into easier company against Montana. The Bruins’ version of the T formation worked well enough in their opener against Washington State but was run off the road by the original model at Palo Alto. California Gloomy

California steps outside the conference to play Santa Clara, apparently the strongest independent club on the Coast and one capable of giving the Bears a rough afternoon. California chances, bright at 45 |the start, lost lustre when the Bears lost to Washington State last Sat/|urday and turned to gloom with announcement that Halfback Jim Ll Jurkovich must give up football. Jurkovich spent most of last sea 75 |son on the bench with a concussion and was knocked out again against the Cougars. The Washington Huskiés meet Washington State at Pullman and Jimmy Phelan will be out for his first win of the season, but it won't be easy. If Billy Sewell lives up to his reputation as the Coast's top passer Phelan may have another headache.
