Hold ‘er, Newt, the place is rolling and twinkling. Equity, ‘the actors’ “union, is cracking down on boozers. Up before it now is the case of one Broadway actor who was in the early part of a play and did not show up at the theater until 10 p. m. Informed of the complaint made by the house manager, the actor replied that he had “overslept.” But Equity is still deliberating. Stiffest punishment for overindulgence ever meted out by Equity went to the late Jeanne Eagles, who was listing badly one night in Milwaukee. She promised to straighten up—and then failed to show in St. Louis on the next stand. After that, the union didn’t permit her on a legitimate ‘stage for 18 months. #" #" ”» FROM Stanley Montfort, m. c. and house singer at the Fox, we've learned a thing or two concerning Red Skelton, Hollywood's

We are indebted to the Indiana Roof publicist for this beautiful bit of prose concerning the dancing advantages of his establishment: “The Roof’s blue skies with rolling clouds, twinkling stars, and rolling clouds, its beautiful lighting effects, over-hanging balconies, and mirror-like dance floor conspire to offer local dancers one of this country’s most beautiful and romantic backgrounds.”

THAT NEW Garbo picture now hds a definite title. This is the one they've been referring to either as untitled or as “The Twins.” Well, the title now is “Two-Faced Woman,” with the Garbo playing a dual role. Robert Taylor is to portray Alexander Hamilton and Hedy Lamarr is to be seen as Madame Croix in “Gentleman from the West Indies.” Slated for early production, the story originally was called “Dawn’s Early Light,” by Dorothy Thompson and Fritz Kartner,.. Katherine Cornell’s next’ play will be one written especially for her by Henri Bernstein, the Frenchman. It will be his first in English. Miss Cornell plans to extend her tour in “The Doctor's Dilemma” five weeks beyond Chicago, with the new Bernstein work scheduled to go into rehearsal shortly after Jan. 1... . The influx of defense-workers apparently has made a theater city of - Washington. A bulletin from the Theatre Guild and the Playwrights’ Co. announces that Helen Hayes in “Candle in the Wind” (which Indianapolis is to see this season) will play the national capital for two weeks instead of the originally scheduled one week. Only once during last season did any play enjoy sufficient patronage there to warrant a twoweek engagement. That one was

Ann Corio, ex-queen of burlesque, is going into the movies with some trepidation. Ann is hoping Hollywood can forget.

NEIGHBORHOODS
By David Marshall
YOU CAN'T KICK ABOUT this week’s newcomers to the neigh-
borhood screens.
The crop includes a pungent anti-Nazi drama, an
amusing musicale, and just about the best Andy Hardy pictureto date! A great many people have toyed with the idea of taking a pot shot at Hitler from some convenient blind. But “Man Hunt” tells of an English big-game hunter who, shortly before the outbreak of the
present war, conceives the fantastic notion of simply stalking Hitler for sport. When he does train his gun on his quarry, however, he is nabbed by the Gestapo. From then on the picture tells of how he (Walter Pidgeon) is used as an international scapegoat, how he miraculously escapes and returns to England to be hounded there by the merciless Nazis. It is a sinister story with a most surprising ending and is on tomorrow through Sunday at the Granada, Rivoli, St. Clair and Strand; Mqpday through Wednesday at the Irving. Other stars of the picture are George Sanders as a coldly brutal Nazi agent and Joan Bennett who plays a Cockney street-walker with delicacy. “Life Begins for Andy Hardy” is quite an improvenient over some of the more recent films in the series. Andy (Mickey Rooney, as if you didn’t know) now is out of high school and can’t be convinced that college is worth a try. He's off to New York to make ‘good on his own for a month before deciding between work and more school. There he’s “taken” by a neat little brunette gold digger. Which helps him make up his mind. The picture is on tomorrow through Sunday ‘at the Irving, Rivoli, St. Clair and Strand; tomorrow through Saturday at the Uptown; Saturday through Tuesday at the Fountain Square; Sunday through Tuesday at the Belmont; Sunday through Wednesday at the Speedway. “Kiss the Boys Goodbye” is a burlesque of professional Southernism based (slightly) on Clare Boothe’s satiric comedy. Although the film version doesn’t have the bite of the Broadway production, it is a very pleasant and tuneful opus. There is, the singing of Mary Martin and Connie Boswell, the piano playing and sarcasm of Oscar Levant, and the swell comedy of Eddie (Rochester) Ander-

os » » The Granada, which, has been operating only over e weekends since its re-opening, will begin an pen-gvery.-day policy Nov. 1. ” ” 2 TITLE OF THE Rivoli's new serial opening Saturday matinee, “King of the Texas Rangers,” refers to Tom King (“Slingin’ Sammy” Baugh) son of Captain King of the Rangers who is murdered by oil field saboteurs. Tom, a famous football player, joins the Rangers to avenge his father’s
. death. During the 15 episodes
he rescues his sweetheart from a

SONJA HENIE'S ONLY real movie competition is Dorothy Lewis, skating star of “Icecapades” at the Fountain Square tonight through Friday. With many of the critics she’s even rated at the top. Also in the picture are Jerry Colonna and James Ellison. Second feature is “Bowery Blitzkrieg” starring the Dgad End Kids, ! # 2 “p YOU'LL GET SORT of an eerie feeling from the. prolog to “I Was a Spy,” the 1934 revival (with Madeleine Carroll, Conrad Veidt and Herbert Marshall) now at the Esquire. HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 8 (U..P.).— Hollywood has crowned a new onepunch champion—Barbara Stanwyck, who floored Kathleen Howard with a straight right. The script calléd for athletic Miss Stanwyck to punch Miss Howard, who is 56. It did not call for her to knock her unconscious and dislocate her jaw, which was what happened. The actresses were working in the Samuel Goldwyn picture, “Ball of Fire.” Director Howard Hawks had been urging them to get more realism into the scene, and Miss Howard had asked Miss Stanwyck to | hit harder. Passion Play Is Impressive,
Audience Is Hushed By Crucifixion Story By EGAN LECK
A hushed audience watched the world’s oldest play unfold last night at the Murat Temple and when the final curtain came down, the ab-
sence of applause and curtain calls seemed the only fitting way to end
It was the Black Hills Passion
Christus. This version is a faithful transcription of the Biblical story of Christ’s last days before His Crucifixion. The dialogue is true to the gospel accounts and has a majesty of phrasing. Oné of the most impressive things about this production is the simple, subdued tone and the startling way in which the director, Mr. Meier, makes use of the most famous of the religious paintings.
Tableaux Presented
All during the course of the play, in a natural sequence, the actors fall gracefully into such poses and groupings as Christ blessing the little children, the Last Supper, Gethsemane, the “Ecce ' Homo,” Jesus Wefore Pilate, the “Via Dolorosa,” the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. All of the most inspired paintings of Da Vinei, Raphael, Michelangelo and others have been used as tableaux to the greatest advantage. The play is long, but the scenes change quickly and easily and the lighting is superb. Mr. Meiel’s portrayal is good and in excellent taste. The play, sponsored here by the Lions Club, will run for nine, more matinees and nights at the Murat.
W. C. FIELDS SUES TO END ANNUITY
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 8 (U, P.)— Federal Judge Ben Harrison today was studying W. C. Fields’ suit to cancel an insurance annuity which the comedian said would cost h $50,000 and return $293 a month. Mr. Fields said he had been under an oxygen tent too long when an agent “high pressured” him. “I'm 57 now,” he said, “and I'd have: to live forever to break even on this deal.”
AHERNE AND WIFE END PLANE TOUR
