Leo Wolff, risking a mangled hand, beat her to them. RELIEF TAX GUT

Centor>T wp. Rate Set by

County Board Will Be Appealed.

Restoration. of the 3-cent cut made in the: Center Township poor

County Tax Adjustment Board will be demanded in an appeal to the State Tax Board, Chief Deputy County Auditor Fabien Biemer. said today. Mr. Biemer charged that the Adjustment Board “took the path of least resistance” when it cut the relief” levy. The Adjustment Board slashed

1$130,000 off the Center relief budget

to make the 3-cent cut in the rate. Mr. Biemer asserted the Board's paramount interest was the protection of the record City budget. The Board cut the proposed $146 City tax rate 3 cents and the 96cent school rate one-third. of a cent in setting the 1942 Center Township inside rate at $3.25—4 cents above the current rate.

Bond Issue Threatened

“Instead of really going into the City budget and cutting it,” he said, “the Board protected it by taking advantage of a l-cent drop in the State rate and lopping off 3 cents from poor relief rates in Center Township. “If Indianapolis taxpayers have to. pay higher taxes next year, they can blame it on: the Adjustment Board.” As deputy auditor, Mr. Biemer is charged with providing adequate funds for poor relief. If funds made available by taxation are insufficient, the County must issue bonds to finance relief. “We've: been trying to get poor relief on ‘a pay-as-you-go basis for years,” Mr. Biemer said. “The adjustment board merely is fooling the

Ipublic ' and: themselves when they

cut the Center. Township rate. No Comment by Walsman “In so. doing, there will be insuf-

ficient funds .to finance relief in

that township in 1942, Therefore it is necessary that the Board's action be appealed and: ithe $130,000 ~ restored.” Mr. Biemer was secretary to the Adjustment Baard during meetings over the past month. . Albert F. Walsman, Board chairman, did not comment on Mr. Biemer’s statement. Mr. Walsman said he believed the Board had tried to be fair in reviewing tax rates at a difficult time,

WINDSORS’ RANCH ISOLATED BY, SNOW

HIGH RIVER, Alta, Oct. 3 (U. P.)—The Duke and Duchess of Windsor were cut off from the outside world at their lonely “EP” ranch house for a time yesterday, when a heavy snowfall disrupted telephoné communications and made roads leading to the ranch impassable. No contact could be made with the ranch house until 6:15 p. m. when the line was patched

sufficiently to allow one-way ealls from the ranch, :
