\ Lou Reichel’s Panthers Open
P\ Season Tomorrow With Loop - Clash Against Military Eleven
Only Two Lettermen
But Optimism Is High

80 don’t dismiss the Panthers just
on This Year's Local Squad as Usual
From ‘midgets to varsity they play a lot of football out at Park Sebbiy
because Coach Louis (Lou) Reichel
says he has only two returning lettermen. The Reichelmen kick off on, the 1941 season tomorrow afternoon at
Park against Elgin Academy. It's
a Midwest Prep Conference game
and the boys intend to start right there on their trip to the title.
Lou says things don’t look so with .an inexperienced squad, very few heavy men and only 27 boys to pick from. But we must
from the Park coach and after all the boys have only lost three games
Fall Means Football
. Fall means football to ‘the Park,
for under the school’ s athletic setup unless physically disabled, takes his turn in scrimmages for his weight and age. Out of 120 boys enrolled 102 are pigskin pastimers. Every afternoon you'll see tumbling tots on one field, the junior varsity on another and 1 e varsity on’ still another. ‘There ‘fine ratings and all use the 'systein. They graduate like baseballers from one squad to another.
Albert Huff, senior left halfback, and Capt. Frank Rabb, quarterback,
returning lettermen this year. Palmer reduced the leftover power to two when he underwent an emergency appendix operation. - Gone is the city’s leading scorer, Thomas Binford, who has enrolled In Exeter, while Herman Kothe, the outstanding linesman of 1940, is now at the University of Michigan. But only Lou seems discouraged. The boys have plenty of pepper. The line should hit around 160 pounds land reading from end to end probably will contain Robert
Dedaker, Charles Bookwalter, Henry Bennett, Paul Ragan, Laurence Earle, Albert Metzger and Alfred Huff. They have seen little actual competition .but are far from new to the game.
Backs Are Light
The backs are a little light but may have power. Capt. Rabb will be at quarter and Bobby Harris will run from the right half’s spot. The beef and power should come from fullback Van Duncan and left half Tom Fox. Coach Reichel says the average is around [16 years and’ the weight distribution should hit 151. Henry B. Schriver from Franklin-Marshall is the former Butler star's assistant. The Panthers belong to the Midwestern Prep Conference and play a four-game schedule in this league. However, there is still room for two teams on this season's card. The dates are Oct. 17 or 18 and Oct. 24 or! 25. If you see anyone looking for a game, send them out to Coach Reichel. The schedule: ct. 4—Elgin Academy. ot 11—At Howe Military Academy. Oct. 17-18—Open. t. 24-25-—-0pen. ov. 1—At Kentucky Military Institute. Nov. 8—Onarga Military Academy. Nov. 14-—-Columbus Academy (Ohio). | (B.F.)
Tackle Problem Solved at Normal
Times Special DANVILLE, Ind., Oct. 3—Hopes of Central Normals Warriors for a place near the top in the Indiana College Conference this fall were bolstered yesterday when Everett (Gunner) Younger, 195-pound tackle candidate for all-state recognition, returned to the campus. Coach Hank Miller now has candidates three deep at both right and left: tackle that have already shown up well in intercollegiate competition. Five of the six tilt the scales at 190 pounds or more. Fighting it” out at right tackle With Gunner Younger are Francis Goodnight, 190 pound Lafayette grid star, who started against Easterm Tilinois, and “Big Ben” Warren, 220, from New Richmond. . ‘Ab left - tackle Miller has “Hod” Batley, 195 pound ace from Connersyille, for first line duty and reserve are Bill Young, 180 poun fighter from Roachdale, and Bob

The highlight of the high school football tussles this week, the Wash-ington-Manual game, scheduled for this afternoon, has been postponed until 2:30 p. m. Monday because of bad weather. Both teams have been undefeated this year. Present and past recdrds favor the Continentals, (but their followers will have to Monday. t6 be shown that they are the team to beat in the| city this year.

“you can’t tell the players without a program,” the hawkers will yell, but veteran Indianapolis Capitals fans won't have any trouble this year—they’re the old familiar faces. When the hockey team gathers at the Coliseum Wednesday to sign a few papers and arrange ice drills with Manager Herbie Lewis it'll be “old home week.” Most of the veterans of last year and some from way ‘back will be on hand.
Of course actual Coliseum competition doesn’t start until Oct. 23 when the Indianapolis Press Club sponsors a skate between our boys on blades and the parent Red Wings. But practice starts here this week.
Border Troubles
Coliseum Impressario Dick Miller informs us that a few of the boys are having trouble getting south of the border. Most of them, however, went through six months’ Canadian training during the off season. The home government. may cut in on their salaries but it doesn’t look like they'll be called during the American League competition, he || says. The sohedule this year has been built to fit the flux and flow of local athletics and shows. There are 18 Sunday games, six on Thursdays, three on Wednesdays and one on Tuesday. A special New Year's eve battle with Buffale is included in the bookings. Dates have been made sO as not to coincide with Butler and sectional basketball and Sonja Henie’s show. Getting back to the players, Dick Bailey, Alvan (Buck) Jones, Hal Jackson, Sandy Ross (up from Omaha), Hec and Kenneth Kilrea, Bill Jennings, Joe Carxveth, Billy Thompson, Jud McAtee and brother Norman, Art Hercherratter, Joe Turner, Les Douglas, Jack Keating and Jerry and Joe Brown are‘to be here Wednesday. Carveth is from the famous center ice trio of Douglas, Carveth and Wilder, while Joe Turner is a goalie from Omaha. The Browns are new Canadian boys. Add to the above Butch McDonald who is reported experiencing some border trouble but may be here. . Doug McCaig will be back if Ebbie Goodfellow can go for the Red Wings and Connie Brown if he doesn’t have to fill in the skates of Gus Giesebrecht with the parents. Home Game
Your inspection of this 1941 skating edition starts on: Oct. 23 but the Caps will have one under their belts by then. On Oct. 19 they test the Red Wings in Detroit. On the 24th they again meet the parents in an exhibition at Akron for the Red Pepper fund. Actual American League warfare starts on Oct. 29 in Springfield, Mass., against the Indians and moves cn to Washington, D. C., where the Caps introduce the new Washington team to the league. It is Pittsburgh on Nov. 1 and then home again on the 2d for the local opener against the Hornets. In recalling some of the Caps: Hec Kilrea is Herbie’s assistant and a former great with Detroit—It was Jennings who set a world’s scoring record here last year with three goals in less than a minute—Jones is the bone crusher and power on defense along with Jackson. Brown is a familiar center ice figure and Jud McAtee is the driving redhead.
