BE GLAD YOU CAN GIVE

It is an old, old question still being asked, yet it was answered two

thousand years ago. It’s the folks next door, yes — but it’s also the child

in need, the lonely old man or woman, the helpless sick, the unfor-

tunate, wherever they are, wherever they live.

Y FUND

—Is the modern Good Samaritan created by your gifts. It is the symbol

to thousands of men and women, boys and girls, and little children that

somebody cares. In times [ike these you know and understand more than

ever before the powerful meaning of that word security. You know how

insecurity can undermine the character and destroy hope. Your gifts through your Community Fund, while partly used for welfare purposes, go toward building hope in the hopeless, re-creating a belief in things, and making good citizens: of those who, without your generosity, could

easily go the other way.

HOW IS MY GIFT ‘DISTRIBUTED?

@ Naturally, you want to know what has become of the dollars that have gone so trustingly into this treasury. What do we have to show for your money? It is not only your privilege, but your obligation to make these inquiries, precisely as it is our ptivilege and obligation to give an accurate account of our stewardship. In the year just concluding, Community Fund agencies cared for a total of 607 dependent and ticipated in programs at leisure time and character building centers . . . 152 were cared for in homes for the aged. In the day nurseries, the number of children increased from 478 in 1940 to 539 in 1941. Babies in maternity homes were given a total of 8,493 days’ care. Our visiting nurses made 57,298 calls. Family welfare cases averaged 1,136 moathly. And, finally, ameng the homeless and transient, the number of meals served totaled 249,844; the number of lodgings 151,530.

Your Community Fund is composed of 37 agencies, each onea special one in some form of giving new life and hope to unfortunate people. In lean years and good years these agencies have carried on. They have seen first hand the obligations to. be met at the peak of prosperity or in the depths

of depression. Once again, through the 37 agencies of the

Community Fund, you will have the opportunity to share in meeting your community obligation. In the next few weeks you will be approached through some channel by one of the | volunteer workers of . the Fund. Ask yourself once again, “Who is my neighbor?” Of course, you know the answer and

you will dig deeply into your pocket so that others may live.
