a strong Kokomo team to a scoreless tie this season. The Greenclads have defeated Southport and Jeff of Lafayette in impressive victories. The Green will be strengthened by the return of John Dobkins, sophomore halfback, who has Tecovered from a leg injury.

Broad Ripple will test its vaunted

power against a Sheridan team beaten already by Shelbyville, 26 to 0. Passing did the trick for Shelbyville but the Rockets are mainly a ground team. Considerable im-

Maybe, Tost Maybe, Tech : Is Headed Toward a Title

By BOB FLEETWOOD

Coach. Robert L. Ball of Technical High School doesn’t even intimate it but the.score book has already served notice on the North Central Conference football crown that the Big Green is headed ‘that

way.

goes after its second victory in the North Central standings when they clash with the Bearcats from Central of Muncie. Injuries haye slowed the Green Wave down but they have not

feated in their first two games. Up at Jefferson of Lafayette last week they were billing the Tech-Jeff battle as the conference. title test for Jeff. They had already racked up two league victories of the four scheduled and a toppled Tech would- almost mean an early title. Tech- had other plans. Led by a driving Jack Hanna, the Green stubbornly refused to: add to Jeff's standings. Final score: Tech, 8; Jeff, 6. Coach Ball calls Hanna “the best back I have seen this year. He stood head and shoulders above any man on the field last week,” he said. Hanng isn’t the only power in the feam’s backfield. There is John Dobkins, a sophomore half who raced 65 yards to score against Southport. He returns to the line-up this week, having been out with a leg injury. Dick! Strahl is the regular quarterback while William “Volk and Robert Meyers, another sophomore, take care of the fullback duties. The team took a hard jolt on the chin on the first play of the season when Howard Beeson, regular ft half, was lost for the year via a broken collar bone. Coach Ball's first line of defense will average around 180 pounds and doesn’t have a “beef” boy in it. To date only 13 points

“How can you think about the title when the next play may ruin ‘But how can you discount a team

Tomorrow -afternoon the Green have been scored through it. The

boys are big but very fast. They seem to love to play football and take - their practicing very seriously. Perhaps this is because of the fighting underclassmen who would like a spot-in the lineup. As witness the ‘two sophomore backs. This is Ball’s seventh year as. Tech’s coach. He started the year - with seven lettermen, five of whom were regulars in 1940. His record to date is- 31: victories, 15 losses and 6 ties.

New Sub Rule

Times Special CHICAGO, Ill, Oct. 2~The new unlimited substitution rule evidently will not materially lengthen college football games this fall. Six opening games in the Middle West were observed for total time, including .the intermission period. The average time wasi2 hours and 25 minutes, 22 minutes less than the 1940 average.

Grodzicki Beats Montreal Nine

COLUMBUS, 0., Oct. 2 (. P.)—

American Association today were one victory away from the junior World Series championship. The Red Birds scored the most decisive victory of the series last night as they pounded out a 16-hit, 13-t0-3 triumpn over the Montreal Royals, International League playoffs winner, to. take a 3-t0-2 lead in the series. Big Johnny Grodzicki, workhorse of the Columbus pitching staff, was touched for all of the Royals’ runs in the first inning but settled down to blank them the rest of the way with eight hits. The Red Birds scored in six of

Max Macon, Chet Kehn and Al Sherer for a total of 23 bases.

Isn’t Expected

To Lengthen Grid Games

The new rule permits a player to re-enter a game an unlimited number of times. Visions of .threehour and longer games had been dancing before the eyes of worried officials. In the Michigan-Michigan State game 107 substitutions were made, yet the elapsed’ time was 2 hours and 26 minutes. With 112 substitutions, the Notre Dame-Arjzona game went 2 hours and 25 minutes. Officials brought the time down by bbserving religiously the new 25second rule, that calls for play within 25 seconds of the time the ball is placed in action by the referee. The longest game was the DrakeIowa tilt, at 2 hours and 43 minutes,

and the shortest, the Vanderbilt

Purdue game, at 2 hours and 12
