Fans Have a Yen for New L Type of Films.
- HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 2 (U. P).— The movie makers seem to be discovering that the public likes Jaughs with its murders. There has always been a market for the horror type of picture, but it was limited. Lately there has been blooming a brand that mixed gore and giggles, and the theaters have discovered they go over. Bob Hope's “The Cat and the “Canary” for Paramount was one of tthe first in the current trend. It was so successful that the studio followed with “The Ghost Breakers” with Hope again starring. Another along this line was “Night of January 16” which Profucer Sol Siegel adapted from the age play of the same name. Rob‘ert Preston-and Ellen Drew had the starring roles. This was more serious than some of the others, but nevertheless was played in large part with a light touch. . And straightaway comedy was provided by: Cecil Kellaway, portraying a drunk, and Cliff Nazarro as a philosophical gasoline station owner who wouldn't sell gas to anyone disagreeing with his ideas. “The - Morning After” furnishes more comedy-murder, with Preston Foster, Albert Deckker, Patricia Morison and Jean Phillips in the : top roles.

® “FLYING BLIND”
Bad’ Actors | Grow Wings
Some of Filmdom's: Worst 'Villains' Are 'Reforming'
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 2 (U. P.).— —Some of Hollywood's most incorrigible “heavies” are trading horns for wings.
It used to be that once an actor established a reputation for cinematic villainy he was likely to play such parts to exclusion of all others. More and more now they are getting away from that, on the sensible theory that a good actor or actress can be equally convincing as a hero or heel, depending on the part. Brian Donlevy is one who seemed doomed for a life of screen corruption, but for several pictures now
he has been on the right side of the fence.
Get Likeable Roles
He eased into such roles with “The Great McGinty,” in which he was a scheming politician, but nevertheless likable enough. Then followed such roles as a flying instructor in “I Wanted Wings,” and a peace officer in “Billy the Kid.” In the new Paramount pieture, “Birth of the Blues,” he is cast as a cornet player. In his next, “The Remarkable' Andrew,” he will be Andrew Jackson. Albert Dekker has played heavy paris for years but got a sympathetic role in “Buy Me That Town.” In “Among the Living,” he has a dual role, playing hero and villain.
‘Rascals’ Reprieved
Marc Lawrence, long an irredeemable gangster, has a sym pathetic part in the picture version of Harold Bell Wright's novel, “Shepherd of the Hills.” Edward Arnold has had a few sympathetic roles.’ He gets a reprieve from rascality in the Bob Hope-Paulette Goddard farce, “Nothing But the Truth.” Susan Hayward, the homewrecker of “Adam Had Four Sons,” is a harmless southern belle in C. B. De Mille’s “Reap the Wild Wind.” And even Veronica Lake, the blond trouble-maker of “I Wanted Wings,” is a nice girl in the comedy ‘“Sullivan’s Travels.”
BETTY FIELD GIVEN 'KINGS ROW' ROLE
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 2. — Betty Field has been borrowed by Warners from Paramount to play Cassandra Tower in “Kings Row,” a role for which half a dozen other actresses have been discussed during the 10 weeks the film has been before the camera, : The part became a problem when Ida Lupino refused it and differences arose between Warners and Director Sam Wood over her Treplacement. Bette Davis asked for the assignment, but studio executives refused.

{ecountry. Two low-budget pictures,
“Incident in Bucharest,” based on ‘s novel by Van Wyck Mason, and ‘Uncensored,” adapted from the 3elgian, will replace “This Above All” on the English schedule.
