BEFORE DELVING INTO TOMORROW'S new movies, there’s an announcement to be made. “Sergeant York,” the story of the first World War's greatest hero, will open at the Circle gn Oct. 17. This is the worde*from Manager Art Baker, who naturally is happy about the whole thing. And he’s not a man to indulge én idle glee. One would be safe in saying that this picture, since its. recent opening in New York, has not reaped a single condemnatory review. It is, for all practical purposes, a true story, an account of the life and exploits of Alvin C. York. Sergt. York in 1916 was a Tennessee Touniaineer, trying to scratch
accompanist will be provided. Out-of-town. singers also will be welcomed, -he added. The choir will begin reliegrenls soon for its fifth season, during which it will appear with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Fabien Sevitzky and probably in a concert of its own.

Sergt. York captured 132 Germans
in a one-man blitzkrieg. For 23 years Mr. York refused to allow his exploits to be put on the screen. But with the coming of the second World War the simple Tennessee farmer, now 53 years old, was convinced that his was a story that had a message of patriotism to all young men in Amercia. By Mr. York’s own choice, Gary Cooper creates the title character and Joan Leslie plays the role of Gracie Williams, the “girl who waited.” It “Citizen Kane” was the first event of the motion picture season here, then “Sergeant York” is the second. The date, again, is Oct. 17, at the Circle.
The Smooth Mr. Boyer—
AND NOW for the new shows opening tomorrow. At the same and aforementioned Circle, we find the debonair, worldly Charles
Boyer as somewhat of a scoundrel in “Hold Back the Dawn.” He marries in order to get across the Mexican border into the United States and then, of all things, actually falls in love with his wife. As a refugee in a Mexican border town, Mr. Boyer is told by his former dancing partner, Paulette Goddard, that the easiest way to
marry an American. Convinced, Mr. Boyer loses no time in bestowing all his continental charms on Olivia de Havilland, a school teacher down there on a tour. In one night, he convinces her that he is the man she wants to marry. But when it comes time for him to cross the border and then desert her, he finds himself in love. With his wife, that is. As she lies seriously ill in a California hospital, Mr. Boyer crashes through the immigration

Gobs and Gals
IN “NAVY BLUES,” ‘opening tomorrow at the Indiana, we have Jack Oakie and Jack Haley as a couple of rollicking sailors enlivening the local scene ing Honolulu. They run into trouble when they run into Ann Sheridan and Martha Raye (in this case Haley’s wife). The climax comes when la Sheridan, ‘circling the U. S. S. Cleveland in a plane, signals her love to the chief gun-pointer (Herbert Anderson), enabling him to point the guns more accurately, the crew to win the marksmanship contest and Haley and Oakie to win their bets. But don’t get the idea that the plot’s the thing. It isn’t. This is a musical. Ten dance routines were devised by Seymour Felix, righthand man for the late Flo Ziegfeld. The music, performed mostly by six comely femmes known as the Navy Blues Sextet, is by Arthur Schwartz and Johnny Mercer. Included are such tunes as “In Waikiki” and “You're a Natural.” Maybe you've heard them already on the neighborhood juke box. . ” ” 2 It's Gable, Again OVER AT LOEW’S they're expecting' ‘a mighty prosperous week. And with good reason. Clark Gable is opening there tomorrow in “Honky Tonk.” Mr. Gable, you may know, is one of the very best articles that an Indianapolis exhitor can get. In addition to all these glowing portents his role in “Honky Tonk” is directly “up his alley.” A slick “con” man, he blows into Yellow Creek, marries Lana Turner, “sews up” the town: in a gambling way and meantime makes life miserable for his pro-moter-fatier-in-law, Frank Mor-
at Loew’ s.
Clark Gable and his sidekick, Chill Wills, are ready for anything in "Honky Tonk,” opening tomorrow

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 2 (U. P.).— Rough and tumble brawls in the movies may be fewer from now on, not because they don’t sell, but because the materials for breakaway furniture and windows are limited.
