NON-SHRINKING "SURFACE FOUND
Clevelanieh Has Tip for Pilots Working on Damaged Craft.

There'll be a lot of home work for the next week or so repairing all the damage from the scores of crackups

Model Contest last Sunday. So you model pilots might like to know. about a new construction method which will banish one of your chief difficulties—warped surfaces. This idea was "thought up by Arthur W. Welsh of Cleveland, and used ih the Junior National Air Races. Art's favorite models are speed ships. “He knew "that the delicate tail 4 surfaces which should be less than 1/18-inch thick to reduce drag, could warp 10 minutes before the race and ruin his chances of flying a model in a straight line over the 178-foot course. Thinking about his problem one day, he saw a large cardboard carton. It gave him an idea.
Stops. Shrinking
i Back in his shop that night he found a cardboard box. He drew an enlarged outline of his plane’s tail $urfaces on the box, cut it out with & sharp knife and covered the hole with tissue, the same as he would have covered the model's frame.
‘ Then he dampened the covering. Tt drew tight and he doped it. He appliéd tissue cement to: the balsa framework of the tail assembly and placed it on the covered hole in the
X. ; + The tail surfaces were covered, the tissue was :taut and it had alteady shrunk to its limit so it couldn’t shrink on the frame and cause a serious warp. It.was a real trick and it worked. Art's ship wasn’t bothered by warps as were many ships entered in the race. The hot sun beating on them jwisted their tails and made them uncontrollable.

“INT Schoo PUPILS] URGED TO REGISTER
Although he urged persons in-
| tending to attend Indianapolis pub~
lic evening schools to register tonight or tomorrow night, John A. Mueller, director of the school special youth service, said that late registrations would be allowed next week at class sessions. Mr. Mueller pointed out that late registrations are discouraged because of the loss of time to pers
song registering. After classes are formed on the basis of early registrations, he said, it is frequently necessary ' to organize other sections because of late enrollments. Classes will be held at Tech,
