“Indianapolis is the coldest place to a man in uniform.” This is what one soldier told directors of the Service Men’s Club last June and the directors were convinced that the soldier spoke for others besides himself.

The Service Men’s Club, in the old baggage building behind the Traction Terminal Station, has taken some of the chill out of Indianapolis for the fun-seeking soldier on leave. Through its dances, games, letter writing facilities and, most of all,

its friendliness and companionship, the Service Men's Club is waging a successful battle here for good Army morale. The need for such a club is shown by the fact that more than 4000 soldiers, sailors and marines spend some time there each month. This is more than half of the total number of service men who must spend their spare time in theta city. Chiefly responsible for the Club’s organization are Mrs. Dorothy Buschmann, a member of the Vol-

»

unteer Department of the Council of Social Agencies; Jackiel Joseph, Park Board president, and H. W. Middlesworth; recreation director. In the club quarters are furniture .donated by business houses, ping pong tables borrowed from the City Recreation Department, billiard tables obtained from a private owner, magazines, a few books, Wiiting tables and stationery. But the club still needs ‘many things. “The boys ask to borrow musical

instruments,” said Mrs. Buschmann.

They need records for the juke box (given by Homer Capehart), and some packs of cards. On Saturday afternoons and evenings, when most of the locallystationed service men are on leave, Mrs. Buschmann obtains a group of young girls who have volunteered their services as hostesses for dances. The girl are approved by a special committee of the Council of Social Agencies. Through the club, the service men now have a contact with priv-
