Anglo - Japanese Relations Take Sudden Turn for Worse, Ishii Reveals.

TOKYO, Sept. 30 (U. P.).—A sudden, sharp deterioration was disclosed today in Japanese-British relations and newspapers resumed a campaign of editorial denunciation of the United States and Great Britain. - . Koh Ishii, chief Government spokesman, admitted that Japan authorities had enforced r ations “to the utmost” in searching British citizens who boarded the British liner Anhui in which they are to be repatriated. He said the Government was “greatly concerned” over activities of Alfred Duff Cooper, British Cabinet Minister for co-ordination of far eastern policy, who according to the newspapers is due in Shanghai soon. “The British assert they are acting . defensively for themselves,” Ishii said, “but we think the process of encircling Japan is still going on.” * Ishii refused to comment on current U. S.-Japanese diplomatic negotiations, but said the question of sending a Japanese liner to the United States and Hawaii to evacuate Japanese subjects was still being considered.

Craigie Stays in Tokye

(There have been indications that Japanese-American negotiations may collapse, partly due to present open and vigorous criticism of the Japanese Government by ultra-national-istic elements.) Ishii disclosed that the British Ambassador, Sir Robert Craigie, recently informed the Foreign Office that he was going to Shanghai “for a short leave.” Only yesterday Craigie suddenly canceled his plans to go to Shanghai, and i was left Uhecsriain whether he would go at a x Ishii disclosed also that the Government was negotiating “indirectly with various countries” in what appeared fo be a new attempt to end the Chinese war. He refused to say whether it was trying to negotiate
