WANTS BRIDGES DEPORTED NOW
Stambaugh Asks for End Of ‘Quibbling’ After Ouster Ruling.
The newly elected national commander of the American Legion, Lynn U. Stambaugh today urged the “immediate” deportation of Harry R. Bridges, West coast labor leader. Urging that Bridges “be sent home without further quibbling,” Mr. Stambaugh said he based his plea on the finding of Judge Charles Sears, Justice Department apectl examiner, that. Bridges uld be deported as a Communist. Commander Stambaugh said in art:
“Legalistic procedure has ‘heretofore proved a barrier to all efforts to deport the Australian alien, Harry R. Bridges. Since our national convention, held in Los Angeles in 1938, the American Legion has consistently contended that Harry R.
Bridges should be deported because
his beliefs and activities constitute a danger to the form of government we know and love. “Generally it is extremely difficult to prove direct Communist affiliations, but the record of Harry R. Bridges, over a period of years, has been one of flouting all decent regards for citizenship, and of consorting with the most active agents of Communism we know. : Confident of Action “The findings of Judge Sears, substantiate the position the American Legion has taken with regard to. Bridges since 1938. It is in-4 teresting to note that Judge Sears| states that in making his recom-| mendations, he does not rely upon any single incident, but rather upon a course of conduct extending from the year 1932 and covering a large number of instances. “In trying times such as these, when the integrity of our Government is being assailed at home and abroad, surely there should be no doubt in the mind of any true American that an ‘alien whose record ‘of subversive activities. continues over a period of nine years is anh undesirable citizen of the United States, Being an alien he is| within our borders only at the| syfstance of our Government.” Stambaugh said that fhe oe has: every confidence ‘that Attorney General - Francis Biddle, who in his address to a section of the American Bar Association meetfng here extolled the integrity of afministrative procedure and referred to the impatience of the public * with inadequate ‘legalistic procedure, will take positive action upon the findings. and recommendations of his special examiner in the case, and follow with the final step necessary by ordering the deportation of the alien Bridges.” Mr. Biddle had no comment on the finding of Judge Sears.
AUTHORIZE TRANSFER OF COUNTY FUNDS
The Marion County Council today authorized the transfer of $100,000 in County Welfare Department ‘money to meet a deficit in the OldAge Assistance fund. The money will be transferred. to the Old-Age Assistance budget from other County Welfare: funds in which there are balances which will not be needed. The Council appropriated about $7000 for extra expenses in several County departments. County Commissioners had asked for $8000 additional appropriation, including $2900 for Julietta Infirmary. The Julietta request was reduced by the Council to $1700.
