in Indianapolis Increased Cent Over August Last Year

. gee By ROGER BUDROW

EVERYONE IS AWARE BY NOW that there is a

building boom on in Indianapolis.

Defense factories are

‘bringing more families into town and the Chamber of Commerce estimates 12,000 more workers will be needed next

year. - Rents are going up. So

ting hard to obtain certain kinds of materials because of|

defense priorities.

,During last month alone, contracts for $2,500,000 worth of residences were signed, the Dodge Reports survey shows. In August last year residential construction here amounted to only $914,000. This means Indianapolis made an in.crease of 177 per cent over g year ago. The 37

states east of]

the Rocky } Mountains had Roger Budrow an average gain ; of 51 per cent. Indianapolis is far ahead of the average in non-residential construction, too. Building contracts in the Indiana area last month in this elassification totaled $3,971,000 as gompared with only $691,000 a year

280. A decline was made last. month In engineering contracts for such work as highways, airports, bridges, power ission lines, oil and gas pipe lines, water mains and waterways improvements. Indianapolis contracted for $565,000 of this kind of work in August. - A year ago the amount was $987,000. The average state increased this work 70 per t whereas Indianapolis made a

ecline. Altogether Indianapolis building ghowed a 173 per cent gain over August whereas the average te made an 83 JS cent gain.

FOR SOME REASON or other, ana corporations haven't taken sdvantage of the Securities & Exe Commission’s regional office Cleveland. Another branch office was opened in San Francisco and it does the lion’s share of the West t business. But a good portion pf Midwestern firms seeking to sell stock to the public and needing to ; SEC regulations still go down “Washington. The Cleveland office has passed on $75,000,000 worth of new stock so far, none of which came from Indiana. Possibly the reason is that the pnderwriters of the big issues this Saiz has had (Indianapolis Power #& Light, Indianapolis Water and ers) have been New York firms ad of Midwestern underwriters. s 8 = INDIANAPOLIS EXPORTED $15,000,000 worth of products in the year ended last month, according to the local Commerce Department office. This meant a

. $otal of 48,400,474 pounds of mer-

~chandise sold abroad. For August alone, Indianapolis exported 5,517,192 pounds, a gain of 73,270 over July.

Soaring gracefully over New York City is a new twin-engined plane of molded plastic plywood built during the past few months by the newly formed Langley Aviation Corp. in a factory at the former clip1° At the controls is Martin Jensen, veteran endurance flyer, who blueprinted the revolutionary plane, Because the materials used in the construction of the craft are found in almost unlimited quantities, it is believed that it may prove to be the solution to many of the bottlenecks of plane production. The plastic plywood, besides being relatively cheap, is also stronger for its weight
