Chicago;

Times Special y NOTRE DAME, Ind. Sept. 26.— Notre Dame will open its 53d football season since 1887, when it plays host to the University of Arizona ‘Wildcats here tomorrow afternoon. The eyes of the: gridiron world will focus on the stadium as Frank Leahy, 33-year-old alumnus who Tocketed Boston College to fame and success in 1939 and 1940, his first two years as a head coach, picks up the reins Elmer Layden dropped last February to become commiissionér of the National Professional League. The new Irish leader uses a whole new set of pass patterns, which are woven out of the basic Notre Dame box and the popular T-formation. Leahy even has his own ideas of how_the “TI” should be used, and they. do not conform with Stanford’s. or the Chicago. Bears’.

In Arizona Leahy has an opening foe worthy to test his theories, as well. as the lineup changes he has made in an attempt to get his 11 best men on the field for what may prove to be an iron man act.

Faces Southwest’s Best

Bob Dove, who matches Stanton’s jersey -number, 42, will be at left end for the Irish, ready to prove his superiority, if possible, over the Southwestern pass-grabbing ace. Wally Ziemba, husky junior center, will be making his first start at the new post, having been a tackle in 1940, but he accepts the challenge of MeCain, who is rated the best in the : Southwest. - Ziemba’s backers are pulling for him to come off best, providing his uncertain knee holds up...s Saturday’s game ‘will unveil for public gaze a passer who may whip the visitors at their own game. Angelo Bertelli is listed to start at left half for the Irish, although he is a sophomore, and Leahy has put in a lot of time on “Bert's” tossing. Arizona may be without the services of Emil Banjavcic, Staunton, Ill, right halfback, who suffered a broken hand in practice, but reports from the West are that he will play. with the injured member in a cast,

standout in the East, Stanford in

The rating, as it stands, is ay classification of football teams based upon (1) last year's performance, (2) this year’s prospects, (3) the general caliber of the competition.’ These : ratings will be changed from week to week as the season unfolds and 'will become more accurate as present unknown quantities are tested under fire. That Sophomore Problem

set any pre-season predictions, but so far the colleges have been hit. almost equally in all respects. At this time of year there is always tke sophomore problem. About 50 per cent of the sophomores who look so good on paper and in spring practice flop miserably. The other 50 per cent become great heroes. And there is no telling in advance. For purposes of classification these ratings have been made with alphabetical designations, A, B, C. etc. There is small difference in a team rated A-1 and one rated B= 99, which is merely a mathematical result after applying the system formula. Top rating this week is Minnesota at A-30. In general the picture is much the same as last year. The Western Conference race will be more even Irish Up in First 15 Notre Dame, under its new Coach, Frank Leahy, is certain to be among the 15 top teams at the end of the season: but Leahy in changing the entire system, and it may take time before it works out. who will make the trip today will be out to re-establish Butler footbali as a midwestern college threat. Coach Clem Crowe of the Musketeers has forewarned his pupils not to hold a Hinkle squad in low esteem. He would have been much happier if the Bulldogs had won last week as he faces the problem of over confidence in a squad which rolled over Georgetown College, 63 to 6. And what's more he gave the losers that six points before the game as a good-will gesture. How about a few for the Bulldogs, Clem? The Xavier eleven went through a long pass drill yesterday. Hinkle’s men went through dummy scrimmage against the freshmen yesterday. In the other games involving Indiana Conference teams Eastern Illinois comes over for the opener at Danville against Danville Normal. Manchester journies down to Terre Haute to encounter Indiana State Teachers College in the first night game ever played in that city. A bitter state rivalry is renewed when Franklin College moved . up

Assistant Coach Robert Farris, you may feel a bit sorry for some of the school boys who ‘will have to line up opposite these chargers and blockers this season. : To begin with, the Rocket forwards are big. And they make that weight count. Farris, who did his footballing at Purdue and doesn’t want for beef either, delights in
