Losing Battle
By BERNARD J. NILLES United Press Staff Correspondent
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 25.—The hustling, dead-game St. Louis Cardinals, backed to the wall in their fight with the Brooklyn Dodgers for
+ the National League pennant, put their hopes on the potent left arm of Rookie Ernie White today.
And their hopes were mighty slim.
Both clubs have three games to i
play. Brooklyn leads by a game and a half and needs any combination of two to win. A Cardinal defeat and a Brooklyn victory, or two Dodger victories, will clinch Flatbush’s first championship since 1920. must win all three games and Brooklyn lose two to win Whe pen-
nant. His First Year
White, 25-year-old freshman, has reached top ranking amongst the league’s lefthanders with 17 triumphs against six defeats. He's pitched
. against the Pirates three times this
year and lost only once. In his last start against them on the first of the month, he registered a 5-3 verdict. Max “Butcher will pitch for the Pirates. A former Brooklyn right-
" hander, he is having the best sea- . son of his major league career with
16 victories against 12 defeats. He started five times against St. Louis and was belted into defeat four times. On the fifth occasion, the Pirates won a 13-inning struggle against St. Louis but Butcher wasn’t around at the finish.
Harry Gumbert hung up his sixth straight victory and 12th of the season yesterday as the Cards blanked the Pirates, 4-0. Gumbert set the Pirates down with six hits and the Cards sewed up the contest with three runs off Jomnny Lanning in the sixth.
How It Siappened
Gumbert and Lanning dueled scorelessly for five innings but the Cards cracked the game wide open in the sixth. Johnny Hopp singled and advanced on Terry Moore's sacrifice. Stan Musial singled Hopp across and went to third on Estel Crabtree’s one-bagger. Frank Crespi was purposely passed to load the bases and Martin Marion scored two with a double. Bob Klinger replaced Lanning and retired Gus Mancuso on a short fly and Gumbert on an infield grounder.
Jimmy Brown, beat out a bunt, took second on Hopp’s sacrifice and scored the final run in the ninth on Moore’s single to right. The Cards have an open date tomorrow and then go to Wrigley Field to wind up the season with two games with the Chicago Cubs.

and spiritual processes. It recalled that Sunday afternoon preceding the Schmeling fight when, after his final workout, the Bomber came into the press room at Pompton Lakes, sat down on a table near the typewriter we were battering and someone asked him if he thought he was going to win this time. “1 win all right,” he said. “And I win quick.” : We were studying the Bomber’s face as he spoke these words and looking him squarely in the eye. We saw an evil glint in those eyes and sensed a pent up ferocity that made us sure, as sure of anything we've ever encountered in sports, that Schmeling was doomed. Feel- » Ing as we did, the subsequent aqestruction of the Nazi hero in less than a round left us completely unsurprised. When the Bomber talked about Uncle ‘Sam’s Army today we again studied him closely. This time there was no evil glint and no sense of harnessed savagery but there was sometning else there-and x could be equally revealing. 2 young, decent, honorable To has a great and humble ‘pride and when he tells you he wants to
join the soldiers as “The. winner] ,
and still champion” you know for certain he’ll fight as hard, if not harder than ever before, to realize that simple, boyish ambition,

Warriors Open
At Danville
DANVILLE, Ind., Sept.25.—Coach Hank Miller’s Purple Warriors open their season Saturday in a ‘School Day” clash with Eastern Illinois State Teachers College on Tiber Field in the Danville City Park.
Several thousand grade and high school pupils are scheduled to be on hand as visitors at the first game. All boy scouts, girl scouts, and school bands in uniform are being admitted free of charge. Fifteen veterans on the squad give Coach Miller experienced men for his varsity eleven, but reserve strength is still a question mark until new recruits are tested under fire. The varsity squad defeated a shock troop eleven 20 to 0 here Saturday in a regulation practice game. No injuries were suffered. The team seems to be nearing the peak of physical condition after two and a half weeks of strenuous drills.

GOLD CREST “21”
By GEORGE KIRKSEY United Press Staff Correspondent
BOSTON, Sept. 25.—Many a heart will skip a beat today while the Brooklyn Dodgers—those glorious Bums from Flatbush—try to get across the finish line in the tempestuous National League pennant
race. The butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker from the Gowanus Canal to ‘Frisco's Golden Gate were one with the Dodgers in their struggle to clutch the elusive pot of gold at the end of baseball's rainbow, a prize that has eluded them for 21 years. ; With a little help from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Dodgers can make it today by beating the Boston Braves in their final game here. If the Dodgers win and the Pirates upset the Cardinals it’s all over and Brooklyn will meet the Yankees in the World Series. If the Cardinals win in Pittsburgh, then the actual mathematical clinching will have to be postponed until Saturday. Both the Dodgers and the Cardinals are idle tomorrow. Whitlow Wyatt of Georgia—affectionately known among Brooklyn fans as “Whitelaw of Chickermauger”’—will go after what Manager Leo Durocher hopes will be the pennant-clinching victory. Wyatt, famed for his insidious sinker ball, has won 21 games and beaten the Braves five times without a setback. In his last appearance
Donelli Named
Steelers’ Coach
GREENSBURG, Pa., Sept. 25 (U. P.).—Aldo (Buff) Donelli, athletic director and head coach of Duquesne University, today was named
head football coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers professional football team. He will retain his positions at Duquesne University. Bert Bell, co-owner of the Steelers who resigned his coaching position with the Pittsburgh club last night, announced that Donelli was signed by the professional club for the remainder of the season.
here he had a no-hit game until the ninth inning. His pitching rival will be Tom Earley, a right-hander
who has beaten the Dodgers one of the four games the Braves have won all season from the Brooklyn entry. Most of the pressure on the Dodgers has been released by events of the past few days. The Dodgers can win by themselves, regardless of what St. Louis does, by taking two of its three remaining games. Some of Brooklyn’s official family actually hope that the clinching doesn’t take Spplace until their Saturday game with the Phillies at Ebbets Field. It'll be more fun in Brooklyn The Dodgers showed their 4 by coming from behind to take the
Braves yesterday in a hotly contested game, 4-2.. With a 2-0 lead going into the seventh, Jim Tobin,
a wily knuckle-ball pitcher, seemed to have the Dodgers on his hip. But Brooklyn filled the bases and,
with two out, Dixie Walker, the
player scorned by the Dodger front office but beloved by Dodger fans, smacked a triple over Max West's head to drive in three runs. It was Walker’s 31st birthday and the tall Georgian played a perfect shot into the side pocket. He picked on an outside pitch and dropped it over Max West's head. West had sneaked up behind the | © shortstop, hoping to catch a short pop fly on the left-handed hitter. It was a disastrous mistake. \
