JOHN PAUL JONES MOVIE IS HELD UP
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 25.—Jimmy Cagney expects to play John Paul Jones sometime, and has wanted to do it ever since a lean season in New York when he earned a little money by. posing in one of Jones’ actual uniforms. The screen play has been completed for more than a year, but Warners won’t make the picture until the war is ended. The studio figures it wouldn’t be very good taste just now to show anybody, even a Revolutionary Naval hero, licking the tar out of the British.
~ NO TINTED NAILS Although Claudette Colbert plays an ultra-modern society wife in “Skylark.” she does not wear tinted fingernails because she doesn’t like them, either for private life or screen roles.

“I Don’t Want to Set the
World on Fire,” is coming up fast. It’s a slow, lilting song, one peculiarly adapted to whistling while the mind is preoccupied with other
matters.
Nearly. all the platter companies have at least one version on the
counters. Those at hand are:
INK SPOTB—My choice of the lot. The Spots use their regular arrangement (one vocal chorus, one speaking and then one vocal) and
for the most part it’s Doc!” is on the flipover. (Decca.) BON BON and His Buddies— ‘Done with a faster gait and a “hot” guitar. The backside “Sweet Mama, Papa's Getting Mad” is , too. (Decca.) DICK ROBERTBON’S orchestra—Piano, trumbone and clarinet take cnoruses and Maestro Robertson sings. The rhythm is very danceable. “I'm Alone Because I Love You,” which sounds like a cowboy song, is the “bh” side.
(Decca.) : MITCHELL AYRES’ orchestra —Fancy vocals are turned in by Meredith Blake and the Four Trumpet-Ayres. The backside is “When Are We Going to Land Abroad?” from the movie, “Navy Blues.” (Bluebird.)

Two More Hits
“JIM” A FIRST musical cousin to that old one, “Bill,” is another tune now drawing plenty of coin in the juke boxes, as the trade papers say. BILLIE HOLLIDAY, one of the half-dozen best blues singers now warbling, does it slowly with a full store of sentiment. “Love Me or Leave Me,” the backside, is in the same vein. (Okeh.) Gale Robbins also does well by “Jim,” to ART JARRETT'S accompaniment, though it's nothing to compare with La Holliday’s. For the “b” side, Mr, Jarrett does that old war-horse, “You Can Depend on Me.” (Victor.) "Third of the current hits fis “Why Don’t We Do This More Often.” There are plenty of choices here, too, such as: THE ANDREWS SISTERS— Done with the usual Andrews vim and vigor, with “I Wish I Had a Dime” on the backside, which is just as good as the front side. (Decca.) . RUSS MORGAN'S orchestra— Rather weak. &You're a Natural,” also from the movie, “Navy Blues,” is the flipover. (Decca.) JAN SAVITT’s orchestra — A strong, solid arrangement, with' the vocal by Allan DeMitt. “A Drop in the Bucket” fills the hill. (Victor.)

Two Albums
WHEN FRANKIE CARLE, pianist with Horace Heidt, put out his first album, the reports were that the record shops coudn’t get enough to supply the demand. And so now Mr. Carle, who knows how to keep a strict, clean tempo that makes for either dancing or listening, is out with an “encores” collection, © The titles: “After You're Gone,” “Somebody Loves Me,” “The Love
done “straight,” with no embellishments.

“Hey
Nest, » “gweet and Lovely,” “I Know That You Know,” ‘Swingin’ Down the Lane,” “The One I Love Belongs to Somebody Bilse” and “I Can't Believe That You're in Love With Me.” Pardon it, but Mr. Carle is something bordering on terrific. The label is by Columbia. “Featuring,” the jacket says, “his inspired clarinet,” ARTIE SHAW presents a collection of the tunes that made him famous —and vice versa. Of course, there’ll be some argument as to what tunes did that, but at least there's no fault to find with: “Frenesi,” “Begin the Beguine,” “Star Dust,” “Back Bay Shuffie,” “Dancing in the Dark,” “Traffic Jam,” “Moonglow” and “Serenade to a Savage.” These were made before Mr. Shaw came forth with his “super band” and that probably will be good news to many Shawites, Victor supplies the labels.

Straight Vocals:
TWO FROM Bluebird: DINAH SHORE is her sultry self in “Love Me or Leave Me” and Irving Berlin’s “All Alone.” UNA MABE CARLISLE makes “It Ain't Like That” bounce and then lulls you to sleep with “City Called Heaven.” From Columbia: With orchestral accompaniment under: the
direction of John Kirby, MAXINE SULLIVAN “recalls” the “St, Louis Blues” and finishes off with “The Hour of Parting.” Again Miss Sullivan is excellent. Three by Decca: ELLA FITZGERALD, who probably knows as much about singing Duke Ellington’s numbers as any one in the business, does exactly right by “I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good” and gets whimsical with “Melinda the Mousie.” “Jealous” and “Below the Equator” are done in simple fashion by TONY MARTIN. And maybe you didn’t know that BING CROSBY sang in Spanish, Well, he does—and well—in “Let Me Love You Tonight” and “You're the Moment of a Lifetime.” Victor: “God Bless the Child,” for which Billie Holliday gets half the composition credit, is plaintively sung by BEA WAIN, and “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” is done with a male quartet in the spiritual manner. BARRY WOOD scores (which isn’t unusual for him) with “City Called Heaven” and “Call It Anything, It’s Love.” LANNY ROS sounds surprisingly thin in “’Til Reveille” and “I Guess mm Have
to Dream the Rest.”
Meets Partner at Shanghai Party
NEW YORK, Sept. 25.—Affair of the heart: It was in Shanghai during the tension of the Japanese incident five years ago that Harris Ashburn went to a party given by Sassoon, the famed industrialist, There were a number of Americans there, most of them a little Jittery about what the future might hold, and one of them, J. H. Browning, a motion picture importer, confided that Le was going to send his family back to the States. Ashburn had just started a dancing career after a long acting and technical apprenticeship in the Fox Studios had fizzled out when Wil-
liam Fox lost control and the new
regime took control. He chatted as one American to another and was properly cordial to Browning’s daughter, Virginia. A year or so ago, back in the States. Ashburn asked Chester Hale's advice on a dancing partner, Hale said he had just the girl—a slim and pretty blond, then working in a chorus.
He brought her around. She was
—such is.the long arm of coincidence—Virginia Browning and she and Harris now dance at the Rainbow Grille as The Ashburns,
