NAZIS INSIST ON AID BY BULAGRIA Troops Must Take Part in War, Even if Not
Against Russia.
By DAVID M. NICHOL Cord hue’ Chiles aly RR Em BERN, Sept. 19.—Bulgarian troops may -be used as occupying forces, perhaps. far from their native soil, even should they refuse to take any active part in the Russian campaign, according to a Berlin dispatch to Der Bund of Bern. This account suggests that the time has come when the Bulgarians
{must make some “contribution” for
the. territory they gained almost bloodlessly through the Nazis’ Balkan campaign. ; : ‘Whether such a move would lead to an actual rupture of the strained relationship between Bulgaria and Russia cannot yet be said, the nhewspaper reports, but it indicates that Sofia can not longer continue to
COW. | Nazi circles are confident, the
account goes on, that Bulgaria will give “the right answer” to the Rus-
‘Isian note of protest against the
alleged use by the Germans of Bulgarian airfields and: naval ports as bases for their attack on the Ukraine. : Manpower Is Needed
The account admits the realization in Berlin that the Bulgarian people and the Bulgarian government are poles apart in their respective loyalties. It is this sentiment, the newspaper says, which may restrict Bulgaria’s participation in the war to “occupational” activities. The report finds interesting confirmation in the statements of a high Bulgarian official who said recently: ;
fore the war is finished you will find Bulgarians in Belgium, Italians in France, and so on.” It is one more admission of German’s desperate need for manpower to meet the joint requirements of its army and its industrial mobilization.
