Flag Pressure Gets Cardinals Down THE CARDINALS are accustomed to heat in St. Louis—the weather variety—but pennant heat is not to their liking. . . . The other day they muffed a chance against the Giants, yesterday they were bowled over by the seventh-place Braves. , . . The Cards are - playing like a worn-out club. Mark it down that it’s all over but the shouting. . . . The Dodgers have completed their schedule against first division clubs. ~~ While Brooklyn rested today the Cardinals had to face the tough (for them) Chicago Cubs. . . . NEW YORK, Sept. 19.—The battle for the National League pennant, of course, is between the Brooklyn Dodgers, on top today by one game, and the St. Louis Cardinals, but the

One of the “losingest” pitchers in the league brought Brooklyn its best break of the season yesterday. He was Manuel Salvo, who fashioned a brilliant six-hitter as the Boston Braves defeated the Cardinals, 4-1, while the Pittsburgh Pirates shaded the Dodgers, 6-5. Salvo, loser of 15 games this season, held the Cards to six hits and, although his mates could get only six hits in the seven innings Mort Cooper pitched, two of them were homers which accounted for all the Boston tallies. Frank Demaree hit his second home run of the year in the first inning with two on. After Estel Crabtree’s triple and a single by. Martin Marion had scored the Cards’ run in the second, Gene Moore hit a homer with the bases empty in the sixth for Boston's fourth run. Pittsburgh spotted the Dodgers a 5-4 lead going into the eighth but scored two runs in their half of that inning to eke out a victory. Johnny Lanning blanked Brooklyn untii the eighth when, with two out, the Dodgers came through with six straight hits which scored five runs. Walker opened the barrage with a double and singles by Herman, Reiser and. Camilli accounted for two runs. Sewell replaced Lanning and Medwick clouted a single, scoring Reiser. Lavagetto then’ sent Brooklyn in front with a double, good for two runs, but Reese fouled

Luke Hamlin, third Brooklyn pitcher, started the eighth but was replaced by rubber-armed Hugh Casey when DiMaggio singled and reached second on Medwick’s fumble. DiMaggio tdok third on Garms’ long fly and after pinchhitter Van Robays grounded out,

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 19 (U. P.)— The St. Louis Cardinals fought to shake off a protracted hitting slump as they engaged the Chicago Cubs in the opener of a four-game series at Sportsman’s Park today. The Cardinals with 10 games to play are one game out of first place but in seven of their last eight games, including yesterday’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of Manuel Salvo and the Boston Braves, they got seven hits or less. Salvo’s fast ball cut the corners so well that he set the side down in order in the last two innings and during the last six frames, only one Cardinal runner was able to advance past first base.
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 19 (U. P.). —The Brooklyn Dodgers, leading the National League by one game, rested here today before opening a fivegame series—including two straight double-headers—with the last-place Phillies tomorrow. The Dodgers, who have beaten the Phillies 13 times this year in 15 Starts bowed to the Pirates, yesteray. A crowd of at least 10,000 is expected to attend the Sunday doubleheader with the Phillies. The total attendance for the Brooklyn tour through the West was 136,357 and so far, Brooklyn has pulled in 981,151 paying fans for all road games.

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 19 (U. P.). —Bleacher golf, designed to give the
spectators a break, makes its debut today. As the nation’s leading professional and amateurs tee off in the first 18-hole qualifying round of the $5000 Hurst Invitational Golf Tournament, spectators, for the first time in history, will be able to sit in bleachers ant follow part of the play. The bleachers were erected near the ninth and 18th holes of tke Torresdale-Frankfort Country Club course and afford a view of several other holes as well. ; It isn’t the only break the spectators are getting. Instead of one large score board, several boards have been posted at vantage points around the course so customers can follow the play. Also, for the qualifying round today, and again tomorrow, the tariff is only $1. It goes up 'to $1.50 for the final 36 holes Sunday. Next year the tournament will be one of the summer’s richest. This year total prize. money amounts to $7000, with: $2000 having been distributed in pre-tournament contests. The winner will get $1200, the runner-up $1000. Next year the total prize money will be $12,350 with first place worth $5000. Ben Hogan, the game’s leading money winner ths season; = Craig

Irish Gridmen
Coach Joe Harmon, who has been bemoaning the loss of 18 football lettermen at Cathedral, should be in better spirits today. . Harmon put his new pigskin brigade through its first tests last night, ‘and as Army, Navy and Marine representatives looked on, he saw it develop a regular gridiron blitz against the Noblesville: Millers. The Irish struck four times by land and air to score a 25-12 victory over the visitors.

Maybe the margin would have been greater, had the first-line players stayed in, but after Cathedral had amassed a 19-0 lead, Harmon sent forth his shock troops, who proceeded to score one touchdown while Noblesville was scoring two. The first Irish touchdown climaxed a 35-yard drive after the opening kickoff. The playoff play was a pass from Emmeit Behr, junior halfback, to Jack "Devine, left end. Shortly afterward John Sage, Irish co-captain, recovered a Noblesville Jumble on the Millers’ 35-yard lin A pass El Behr to Joe Tuohy was. good for 15 yards, and then Behr took off around left end on a reverse and went the rest of the way to the goal. It was Behr again who loped 47 yards for the third Cathedral marker in the quarter of the same figure. Early in the final period, Noblesville’s desperate attack by air met its first success, and six points were chalked up on a toss from Dick Kinder to Calvin Arnold. Later Chuck Grothe scored for the Irish on a nine-yard plunge after a 56yard drive had set the stage for the touchdown. A second Kinder-Arnold pass completed the scoring.
