flower and vegetable garden and are just as much trouble to the amateur as to the commercial grower, If the gardener would adhere to a few principles and practices, he would enjoy almost weed-free plots.
Weeds have always been a source of trouble to American farmers. In Colonial days weeds were a cause of friction between white settlers and the Indians. The Indian squaws kept their hills of young corn practically free of weeds while the white farmers often allowed weeds to grow in their corn hills. ' The Indian squaws learned that very innocent remarks about weeds in corn hills would keep the white farmers seething with indignation. Furthermore, the weeds reduced the yield of corn almost in the same proportion that the Indians’ sarcasm increased the ire of the white settlers. Weeds are plants out of place. They cause considerable loss to gardeners by reducing yields and quality of crops as well as increasing labor costs for their control. Large weeds, being stronger, are harder to kill than small ones. It is also difficult to remove large weeds without injuring plants growing closely. Growers have more invested in large weeds than in small ones, since the longer the weeds grow the more water and fertilizer they will have taken from the garden, and the more they will have shaded and crowded the crop plant. The longer

¥ ® ” Q—How far should a chimney extend above the roof to assure a strong draft? A~—To provide free draft, a chime ney must be at least four feet above a flat room, while two feet above the highest point in gable construection generally is enough. Be sure that the flue is of adequate diameter and is the same size from bottom to top, as narrowing toward the vent invariably stifles the draft, : » ” 8 Q—A leather easy chair is cracking due to steam heat. What treatment do you suggest? A—When leather upholstery gives evidence of drying out, a simple remedy is to rub in plain white vaseline or neat’s-foot oil. Rub in firmly all of the lubricant that the dry surface will absorb, then remove any excess with a clean, soft cloth. = 2 #8 Q—Where is the best location for a radiator in a room or hallway? A—Radiators are most efficient when placed in the coldest areas, which are invariably located directly below the windows whether in a room or hallway. Here the radiated heat can most effectively counteract the air which sinks when chilled by contact with the cold window glass.

ontrol Weeds
Is to Get Them af Early Age
Weeds are a problem in both the they grow in the garden the more they cost the grower. - The cheapest and easiest way to control the weeds is to cultivate when the weeds are small. serves two purposes, maintaining a mulch and conserving moisture.
This
Cultivation should never be deep
enough to turn up moist soil to dry out during dry spells. Sweeps or flat knives that skim through the ground just under the surface will control small weeds as well as cultivator teeth and will leave the ground smoother and’ prove less injurious to the shallower roots of plants.
Weed control includes more than
cultivating to kill weeds after they have started. It includes the use of weed-free seed, the use of wellrotted manure in the decomposition of which many weed seeds are killed, the planting of seeds as soon} as the soil is fitted so the crop plants can start ahead of the weeds, the early preparation of seed beds with subsequent harrowing before seeding to kill the weeds that have
germinated and the prevention of seed production by weeds. Actually, if weeds did not go to seed the problem of weed control would be solved. “One year of seed means seven years of weeds” is an old saying that is very true, because many weeds exhibit delayed germination; that is, some of the weeds, perhaps
most, generate the first year, but others will not or cannot germinate until the second year, the third, the fourth, or even for many succeed-
ing years.
So if the weeds cannot be pulled
out, cut them off and dispose of trem before they go to seed.
Sidewalk Hint er
For Homeo
Concrete sidewalks or flagstone paths can be laid directly on the earth granting natural drainage facilities and soil sufficiently loose to assure moisture filtration. When adequate drainage 1s lacking, the installation of a well-packed base of at least six inches of gravel or einders is essential to prevent the collection of water from undermining the concrete, : Whatever the path
surface make convenient side and section forms. Lay sidewalks in about five foot sections with narrow vacancies to allow for expansion. The ir= regular ‘designs commonly emphasized in concrete flagstone construction adequately compensate for any movement. : Pour the concrete in alternating sections, and when hardened, remove the cross boards before filling remaining areas. Level off each section before drying with a board pressed hard against the side forms to remove

AWay to Keep Garages Clean
THE MAINTENANCE of clean= liness in the home garage as well as its’ redecoration are often made difficult due to those stube born oil stains which commonly appear on walls, doors or trim. Lubricating oil is non-drying and tends to penetrate deeply into wood insufficiently protected. Consequently, if not completely removed, the stains not only become deep rooted, but also prove an insecure foundation for paint ing, causing the film to discolor ‘and soften. However, 4 comparatively simple treatment renders the affected wood suitable for re- - decoration. : Scrub the stained areas thoroughly twice with a strong trie sodium phosphate or sal soda solution, allowing at least a week for the wash to dry between applications. Follow with a straight house"hold ammonia rub to neutralize the surface alkali which inevitably remains as's result of the solution treatments. : When the surface is dry once again, a thin sealer coating of pure orange shellac over previous spotted areas renders the wood suitable for painting.

through July, 1941—to 11.4 per cent. With the average nfonth of 193539 taken as the base month of the

Labor costs in recent years have risen more rapidly than those of materials, and show 15.4 per cent increase since July, 1940. The labor index now stands at 119.3. Building supplies, on the other hand, increased but 9.4 per cent during the past year and show a current index figure of 110.7.
