By JEAN GRAFFIS Times Special Writer BERLIN, Sept. 18.—There’s no such thing as a Great White Way here any more, but there are plenty of double-curtain, blacked-out doorways through which fumbling feet can step into a realm of food, drink, music, lights and laughter. Any tempo is available, from super-effete restaurants featuring atmosphere, service and high prices to catch-as-catch-can cafes sporting one instrumentalist, a miniature bar and thrice the number of revelers that there is room for. War with Stalin hasn’t diminished the importance of Russian eafes in Berlin’s - nightlife. Am Zoo on Kurfuerstendamm, Tary-Bary and Don on Nuernbergerstrasse, and several ‘others in the west end do amazing business. Service is ‘slow and prices stiff. It's customary to: buy the orchestra (from three, to five pieces) a drink if you stay all evening; two drinks if special numbers are requested. Germans ‘are partial in lesser degree to Italian atmosphere. Roma and Taverne are both well patronized, though music is limited to a single pianist at each place. Roma atmosphere is sleek, smooth, dignified, - comfortdble. = Taverne, newsmen’s rendezvous, is ‘noisier and more cosmopolitan. :

clubs with the French label. In a few exclusive places, native Frenchmen have begun to appear as waiters. But they are outnumbered by Italians, many of whom are fugitives from jobs or establishments of their own in England, France and even America. The Jockey Bar has-a jazz band, American style of about eight years ago. Band, food and drink for an evening, however, are expensive, At none of the better-regarded |. places does anyone-bat an eye when a bill of 150 marks is presented for cocktails, dinner, wine, ‘liqueur for four persons. That makes $60 at the standard exchange. Numerous are the variety houses, headed by Wintergarten, Scala and Kabarett der Komiker. And there are plenty of cabarets with plentiful cheesecake talent. Dance bars are rendezvous for the lonely hearts. Some of these places outdo Broadway’s famed public ballrooms. Others are dingy, smokish, garish. But all are orderly, Thousands of Berliners have the opera habit. Other thousands trek nightly to the playhouses, where light comedy and bedroom. farces are popular. Shakespeare and G. B. Shaw received good billing and were good bezomice at various times last winter. .
