FROM JAZZ ROW the news leaks out that Orson Welles may be working on a film depicting the. life ‘of .Louis Armstrong, the great trumpet man whom associates call the foremost performer in the business. Anyway, the report is that Hazel Scott, of the Cafe Society night club in New York, may be chosen to play the

Goodman, has written a piece ‘which They say may be a hit, It’s called “The Earl” and dedicated to Mel's favorite keyboard manipulator, Earl Hines. . . « Fast on its way to the top (or already arrived) is a new song, “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire.” Decca has three recorded: versions on the way: By the Ink: Spots, Bon Bon and His Buddies and Dick Roberston’s orchestra. And that isn’t all. Columbia has it by Horace Heidt; Bluebird by Mitchell Ayres and Okeh by Tommy Tucker. No more need be done to make the number a hit. . . . Bandleader Raymond Scott, who need never worry about getting publicity, expresses concern over the prevalence of nearsightedness in his profession. “It must be more than a coincidence,” says Scott, “that so many bandleaders such as Benny Goodman, Kay Kyser, Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey, as well as at least a third of the men in the country’s leading bands, all wear glasses. “There ought to be a law,” Raymond exclaims, “against arrangements ‘scribbled out, in pencil, which usually become half-oblit-erated after a few weeks on tour.” And probably Mr. Scott’s men think there should be ‘a law

- IT TOOK ORSON WELLES to show the movie magnates they didn’t know as much about motion pictures as they thought they did, but one phase of the Cinema City industry which even the boy genius would have trouble matching is the production of technicolor films :

It's gotten so every new movie review on a color film usually

says “. . . and the most syberb technicolor to date.” Each of those reviews is true. The technicolor people keep coming up with new films better and more perfectly toned than the last. Personally, I'm the kind of guy who rushes to the nearest movie manse whenever they as much as show a 10-minute short in color. Even if they're bad I like ‘em because of the pigmentation. If you feel even slightly the same way youre going to love this week’s neighborhood newcomers— “Blossoms in the Dus{’ and “Shepherd of the Hills.” Both ‘are beautiful examples of the way all our movies. will be some day. “Blossoms in the Dust” will have to be given a slight edge because of Greer Garson, the green-eyed, titian-haired lovely who plays Mrs. Edna Gladney. She’s what the inventors of technicolor must have had in mind when they dreamed up their three-negative cameras. Mrs. Gladney, as you no doubt know by now, is the founder of the famous orphans home in Ft. Worth, Tex. “B. 1..T. D”

and has a half dozen new tunes. Completing the program is an “Our Gang” comedy. ” ” ” : THE ESQUIRE'S latest revival pictures (opening tomorrow) are one of Bette Davis’ finest “Dark Victory” (with George Brent and Geraldine Fitzgerald) along with

“Remember?” (Greer. Garson, Robert Teylor, Ley Ayres),

FOR THE PARES family night program there’s the Don Ameche-Betty Grable technicolor film, “Down Argentine Way” and Richard Dix’ “Man of est” which to do with the early h%tory” of Texas. 2 #8 THE GRANADA, which for a month and half has been “the house *of action,” half-way deviates from that policy for this week when it shows the technicolored “Shepherd of the Hills” be tomorrow for four days. The “action” half of the bill will be Rich-_ ard Arlen’s “Forced Landing.”
